where to start learning

Could anyone recommend some entry-level tunes for those of us who are starting out on the piano?

There are a tons of music for beginners, but as you're an otaku maybe Dango Daikazoku (CLANNAD). Don't touch Touhou yet unless you just want to play the chorus (which is very simple, Touhou is only hard with all the background + bridge melody)

Funny, that was my first song I learned too.

But anyway, start reading about basic music theory if you're unfamiliar with sheet music in general.

Learn chords and scales.

I started out on To Zanarkand Piano Collection version, so yeah...

I can't find out a fleshed out version of that song however. Most versions are either just the melody, or the really basic one where you have the melody and one note on the left hand.

I swear there are ones where the left hand plays chords instead.

It depends on how you want to play really.
You can play like a proper musician, reading from sheet music, or you can play like a guitarist who uses tabs and simply work out what keys to play.

While maybe a tad challenging for entry level, Karma (from Ever17) is among the easier pieces to learn. http://tinyurl.com/67udvhk

I think it's good practice for helping people learn to read notes with ledger lines.

One may own a keyboard yet still find virtual piano amusing.
