The game has a serious side and a comedic side and they change often and abruptly during the first seven chapters (introductions of all the good and bad charas, like episodic stuff here), then in the beach chapter it goes in routes and the comedy gradually diminishes after it, and as chapters pass by it goes dead serious to apocalypse, alternative dimensions, conspirations, killing off charas one wouldn't think would die etc.

Also if you want to read MLA, you need to read the first Muv Luv before. Extra is shitty, Unlimited is pretty good. Don't give up on it because of Extra. Unlimited is basically mandatory for reading and you won't know what's going on in Alternative otherwise.

And be prepared to see all your favorite characters die in horrifying ways. MLA is that kind of VN.

You need to read the first Muv Luv game before Alternative. ML is split into two parts: Extra and Unlimited. Extra is a generic school harem thing but it introduces you to all the characters and there are flashbacks and such in Alternative. You can skim through it as soon as you get bored. Once you finish Sumika's and Meiya's routes, Unlimited is unlocked. Play it by starting a new game and just stick with whichever character you like most. The endings are basically identical.

Then go enjoy Alternative.

Almost no one in this community is actually qualified to judge the quality of a translation, so it’s really a moot point for the most part.

Especially given that the people who actually play translations really have absolutely no way of knowing if what they’re reading is even anything close to what the original Japanese said.

Beyond obviously machine translated “work,” it’s really not worth the time to bother going around policing translation quality or whatever, as the people who play the translations simply do not know/care about the translation itself, only the fact that it exists.

In the end, it’s simply a 仕方のない話.

Given my stubborn personality, however, my knowledge of the inherent futility of criticism in this regard fails to repress my underlying desire to lavish criticism upon the situation and its constituents.

Understanding comes first. You are ultimately doing a disservice to yourself, the original creator of the work, and the people who will (perhaps) eventually play the translation you have produced.

How are you doing a disservice to yourself? Simple. Going through each and every line of the original text with a dictionary and grammar book and trying to force your brain to render it into an English sentence that you understand is a truly depressing and misguided way to learn a language indeed. You will ultimately end up with a warped understanding of language, tainted by your own preconceived notions of how language should work and constrained to the framework of a conversion from Japanese to English.

Immersing yourself in Japanese, casting aside the idea that you need some sort of equivalent in English in order to understand the conceits behind the language, and learning to covet the ways in which it is so very different from your own worldview (for one’s worldview is inevitably painted by language and its intricacies) is the only true way to gain an understanding of the language on its own terms.

Once you have done this, only then can you examine the similarities and differences between English and Japanese and begin to construct a method of transposing meaning from one language to the other.

Unintended malice is every bit as cutting – if not more so – than intended malice.

Finally, I believe it should be quite obvious how a lackluster translation does a disservice to the people who play it. Even if they do not know – or care about – the fact that they are indulging of an inferior product as compared to the original, the implications here are obvious.

Such are my concerns and such are my reasons for… well, I wouldn’t go so far as calling it campaigning… Such are my reasons for ineffectually brandishing my words against the beast known as bad translation.

Hopefully that clears a few things up. Or at least makes me come across as merely an asshole instead of a total asshole.

Right the Demonbane anime goes pretty much like this

Starts off with a mysterious opening

Quickly devolves into monster-of-the-week with light slice of life elements (It's not bad)

About 3/4 of the way through they remember that what it's based on, everything goes to shit too quickly to react and things just stop making sense

Then it ends, in order to understand the ending you have to have either a) played the game b) read the manga or c) read additional source materials.

But you find out it's one of the game's better endings.

If you haven't had any exposure to Demonbane it's not bad, not good but not bad, when everything goes to crap you pretty much have to read additional materials to know what's going on. It's animation isn't bad either, if I recall it had one of the few uses of 3D and 2D animation cross-blending that I liked, the voice cast was good and all in all it was felt like good show could have emerged but they didn't bother due to time constraints.

It says you don't have DirectX9 installed on your system. That error comes up a lot when you have the wrong version installed. From my experience, Sharin is a 9/10 VN and G-Senjou is a 7/10 VN. It's not bad, but it's a lot worse. The protagonist is an unlikeable dickhole, most of the story is boring, and the plot twist at the end is fucking laughable. Seeing Maou outwit everybody was fun though.
