Assistant Managers make more like 30k, and they also have work a lot of overtime at most restaurants.

At Target I started at $10 an hour with $14-$15 being my raise cap. It's much better pay and work than McDonalds at all levels. Retail is definitely the way to go if you want a low skills job that you can live off of.

Another good one would be becoming an EMT/Paramedic, they can make 50k+ fairly easily and getting certified only takes 3 months. They mostly spend their time on call so you'll get a lot of time to take it easy, especially if you work a 24/48 schedule.

>> No.7387696

If you get a GED it should be pretty easy for you to get some basic jobs, it's evidence that you aren't pants-on-head retarded (well at least in the context of other grunt employees). For working at like, Safeway or Starbucks etc the employers are specifically looking for people aren't overqualified because someone with like, a biochemistry degree will probably quit at the drop of a hat after a short while, being more of a waste of time for the company to train and get comfortable with the job than anything else. So, with just a GED it's easier to get some simple job.

Also if you go to a local city college (which is far, far, far cheaper than a uni, and you can get in if you have a GED), you can pick up a certification for some specialized trade/skill, like becoming an electrician (electricians can actually make good money and there is always a need for them, since electrical equipment always needs repairing eventually, or you could specialize in installations instead etc).

Alternatively you could major in English, get a certificate and go teach English in Japan. It doesn't pay that well and there's lot of other issues with doing it, but it does pay enough for subsistence there and hey, you get to live in Japan and are not expected to closely bond/interact with the people there anyway, so that's something to aspire to. Downside is usually those gigs last like 2 years, it's much harder to become a permanent resident teaching there but I do believe it's possible.

I remember the AP tests were pretty easy, so that was encouraging. It's been so long though. I can't recall most of what was taught, so the fear is still there. but either way I should at least try the GED test when I stop procrastinating

It's not entirely your fault, Anon. It's just a sign of the times. Colleges and universities don't equal guaranteed jobs like they did thirty years ago. In my opinion, the only point of even going to a formal college nowadays is to shmooze up the professors and make contacts to try to pursue your dream job. I imagine that most of you, like me, don't exactly enjoy socialization, but there's no other option when it comes to trying to get a job. And, especially if you're in college or university, you're wasting your time if you don't try to make all the contacts you can while you're there

Companies don't want diplomas anymore, it feels like. They want people that they know are capable. They want people they can trust, and building up a healthy number of references is the only way to show them you're worth hiring, these days

I'm not from the USA so my story may differ:

In high school, I did poor in exams, especially in the final two years. I didn't get accepted into University so I went to a community college to try the exams again, then I could re-apply for University. I passed Community College but I fucking hated it (I felt like scum going to school with people who could barely speak English, had down syndrome, were all ugly and awkward). I have a fear of falling behind, I lost all the friends I had because they went to University and I was stuck in Community College.

Now I'm at a point where I can go to a University (albeit a shitty one) to study a course I don't particularly enjoy, or take another year off to try to get into a course I do enjoy OR go to see my father who works abroad as an ex-pat and convince him to get me a job on a boat so I can travel around.

Even if this is the supposed average for your area, it doesn't mean you can't find something at a much better price.

Unless you have ridiculously high standards for your income bracket, you should be able to find a decent place, though it will likely take a lot of time and effort.
