Well, when I was first starting to get into Touhou I read Inaba and just overall liked the character. I liked how hard-working she was, how optimistic she seemed even though some of the punishments seemed quite severe. The whole running away from the Moon and seeking asylum in Eientei was also an interesting unexplored story line. Not liking humans that much was also a huge plus. In other words, her personality is my foil.

I started to listen to Touhou music and I found her theme. Within the first few days of finding Lunatic Eyes, I had listened to it for a good solid 7 hours each day. Even simply listening to her theme brought out some of the better emotions that I have experienced in a long time.

Eventually I found Danbooru and was enthralled by the sheer volume of fan art for her. I went and looked to every single picture made at the time while listening to Reisen's theme.

Due to the fascination of it all, I started to have dreams where we hung out and did mundane things, later moving onto a lasting relationship as the time went by.

She just...stuck with me since I found her.

I seek to argue that the visual novel Yume Miru Kusuri: A Drug That Makes You Dream (henceforth referred to as YMK) is poorly written with the exception of the route of Mizuki Kirimiya, which is exceptionally well done. Mizuki's route is the only one that provides us with appropriate and believable character development through overcoming a life threatening problem and it's only in Mizuki's route that we are provided with consistent, steady progression of the problem and real insight to the problem that is absent in the other routes.

In the beginning of the visual novel, before entry into any specific route, we meet all three of the heroines. Initially we can see serious problems with Aeka Shiraki and Nekoko. Aeka appears to have a serious bullying problem and we can infer that Nekoko is abusing drugs based on her behavior and delusions. At this point only Mizuki's true problem in unclear. This is something that the writer took great care in slowly unraveling.

Soon we see Mizuki acting rebellious, but the nature and magnitude of the problem remain uncertain. Over the course of the route her behavior becomes more and more out of control, and even dangerous. Starting with simple acts such as smoking, it leads to a life threatening situation in a trip to Hong Kong, with steady progression in between. We are given actual insight to why she has these problems with unique issues such as not being able to see a future in living to the next day. We find that the protagonist and Mizuki learn to rely on each other and the ending resolves Mizuki's issues of not being able to see a future.

Do you have a similar story for Aya?

>> No.7426689

>>7426685
-Continued from the last post-

In contrast the routes of Aeka and Nekoko fail to give us real consistent progression of the problem. We see the problem reach a climax, but there is something left to be desired in between. We are hardly given any insight as to why they have these problems. Aeka has a simple bullying problem and Nekoko has a simple drug problem. There is room for analysis of the characters and what they're going through but this is, for the most part, unavailable. Though they have satisfying endings, they don't feel as natural as Mizuki's.

Overall I believe that only Mizuki's route is well written and clearly has far more effort put into the writing with insight to a unique look at the problems of a high school girl. I believe that the character development stands out as very consistent much more appropriate than the other routes had.

No one's ever asked before. I'm touched, really.

It's not a very good one, really. It all happened last year on the night before Valentine's Day when Arc made a dumb post about Aya regurgitating chocolate into your mouth, like a bird feeds its chicks. For some reason, I thought that was incredibly romantic. I obsessed about it all night and, like the Partridge Family song goes, I woke up in love that morning.

What do I love about her? Well, for starters she's absolutely beautiful and not just in fanart... I mean, I really like her character portrait in PoFV and StB. Yes, her hair, her eyes, her wings, her outfit are all wonderful. I love her hard work and dedication, I love her approach to her job, I love her "down-to-earth working girl" thing she has going on, I love her smile... man, I really love that smile.

I love her. I really, really do.

Drats, I even knew this question was coming and tried to prepare, and I still have nothing.

I like the determination to move past problems mixed with vulnerability and a need for someone to lean on. The willingness to stand up for someone else even when afraid to stand up for herself.

And more superficially I always like a nice quiet/innocent type.

It's not something one really thinks much about, admittedly. It took me a while to dig all that I typed out of my head.

It's important to remember that sometimes you don't need a reason to fall in love with someone... it just sort of happens. You can spend hours trying to justify it but it just is what it is.

By the way, do you know when her birthday is? I don't remember if it's mentioned in the game but it should have been on ruf's page for it... but since ruf went out of business... well... you know.

Do you celebrate any special occasions with her? If so, how? How long has it been since you took the plunge?

I don't know her birthday, and that bugs me a lot. I think I might know but I'm not sure, the internet is failing me here.

More than a year, less than two? It's not something I can put a date on, I probably didn't reach the conclusion that I liked her until months after going through YMK, a kind of gradual realization.

Special occasions...funny story, this year I was bedridden with a terrible flu on Valentines Day (and a few days proceeding it) so I had someone else go pick something up for her. I think it caused a bit of an awkward situation for them but I don't really get bothered by those sorts of things.

Also, since I'm in a sharing mood, my nightstand:

I did my own bit of searching and it looks like she doesn't have an actual birthday... they have databases for this sort of thing, believe it or not. I suggest you use the date her game came out as her birthday, the 22nd of December. How does that sound?

Oh, I guess there's not really a moment of epiphany like you had or anything like that. I pretty much just started saving way more Youmu pictures than any other Touhou way back when I started to save Touhou pictures, and realized that there probably was a reason for that.

I do love how she's got this sort of dual nature, in more ways than just the obvious. She's strong and serious, but she can be really... I don't know if naive is the way to put it, but you get the idea. She's more than capable of cutting down anything for Lady Yuyuko, but is kind and soft when such things aren't required. I find that one especially intriguing, how there's almost as many pictures of Youmu being badass with flashing red eyes as her being cute and soft, and I still haven't figured out which kind I like more.

And I also seem to have a thing for swordswomen in green or teal in general, though of course none of the others (there's a surprising number of them, at that) can really compare.
