If shiki can just cut along death lines then why does he use a knife? why not just fingers/nails or a katana or a very long/large needle?

Fingers are usually too thick to enter the lines of death.
For especially thick lines (e.g. The Dead), he CAN use his hands like that.

He was never trained to use a katana.

Needles would only help for the dots, they'd be awkward for a cutting motion.

He's a Nanaya anyway, his body is made to be assassin-ish.

it has nothing to do with the having to HAVE the mystic eyes per se.

theoretically it's possible to make use the lines even if you don't have the eyes. it's just that you'll never hit the exact spots/lines.

No it isn't. You don't connect to Akasha without the eyes, therefore you can't actualize the recorded death.

It was even said in Tsukihime, that even if Shiki pointed out the lines for other people, they couldn't do anything to them.

Shiki's knife is also a family heirloom, and one of the few remaining links he has to his heritage.
Basically, he really likes the knife and he uses the knife because that's how he expresses how much he likes the knife.

Shiki can use guns to hit the dots. In the melty blood mango he helps Sion aim at Wallachia.

It should be possible for him to use a gun, but it would seem like he's just more comfortable with knives.

When it comes to projectiles, I believe "intent" has a lot to do with it. Someone with out the eyes can shot with intent to kill, but not the intent to stab their (as far as they know) non-existent dot.

Without the eyes, you can't do the death lines or dots at all. Period.
There's no way for anyone.

The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are (nearly) unique.

(Nearly as in multiple people can have them, but it's such a rare ability that the people who have held them in the past 4000 years can probably be counted on one hand)

That was my point actually. You can't use the dots with out the eyes. You can still kill people just fine though.

I was explaining the use of projectiles with the eyes. As long as you "intend" to hit their dot and do, it will "count".
