Do you not understand what a miko is? Shinto is Taoist magic, Japanese-style.

First there was folk-religion. Then there was Taoist magic religion from Chinese superior master race (this was back when China was master of all of Asia and kings would suck China's dick for the technology, knowledge, and prestige of being acknowledged by China)

Then there was Buddhism and the monks realized, this is just folk religion with Taoist magic mixed in. We can make up some shit to make Buddhism compatible with it, and then all the Kami became Buddhas and with the merger of Buddhism, Japanese religion took a a more structured and theological form. And Shinto and Buddhism could not be told apart from eachother.

Then Tokugawa was like, fuck this shit. I love Japan so fucking much because it is mine and I don't want to take shit from China. Separate that Chinese Buddhist shit from my Shinto. And then Emperor Meiji was like, I totally agree with that Tokugawa dude, and China is a fucking embarrassment to all of China, lets separate the Japanese part and make it out to be all that is good and make me a Japanese god-emperor. And then they realized Shinto was fucked, because Shinto was just a collection of folk stories and myths. So they were like, well Buddhism sucks because it has a ecclesiastical structure that is foreign and evil, and that is the part that is competing for power because they are organized.

Taoist magic is perfectly fine though, those are just fundamental truths about how the world works. No gods, or competing organizations there. Just good old magic and metaphysical laws. Not to mention it looks fucking good if the emperor can do magic and shit, rather than being a servant of Buddha.

And then Shinto was invented and became a mix of Taoism and Japanese myths.

Just having 2 cats, they'll wind up breeding, and their brood will breed, creating a very large number of cats (large enough to slow the framerate of a TEXT BASED GAME) in a very small amount of time. So I guess the joke is, "2 cats? enjoy your 5fps", or something to that measure.

2 cats is enough to bring a fortress to a dead stop.

They will breed under your nose while you take care of the hoards of goblins or deal with traders. And just when you think, "hey, I can just slaughter them for food!" they begin adopting dwarves. Cats, unlike other animals, adopt their owners; but the relationship is still the same.

Then you simply cannot slaughter them. A dwarf could be adopted by several different cats, all breeding with every other cat as they follow the dwarf around the fortress, clogging the halls, and just simply being in the way.

And then they die. And oh, how the dwarves are sadden by their deaths. So sadden they, after a few more pushes, by perhaps a fallen friend or even the death of another pet, they begin to throw tantrums. And destroy things. Or hitting people. Which could, in turn, make others and themselves depressed as well. Soon enough, everyone's throwing a tantrum.

And then someone goes crazy and kills another.

A catsplosion is completely preventable. You can assign cats (even those taken as pets) to a pasture, and smash a bridge over it.

I haven't really played since 40d, since I'm slow to adapt to changes on top of the game getting more complex with the newest arc.

I do plan on relearning everything soon. But back in my days, I don't recall a pasture system. I never experienced a catsplosion however, as I took measures of slaughtering every female cat that was born.
