I can do 100 lines in maybe an hour or an hour and a half. You do the math. Then figure that I'm going to college and only have time to work on it for 3 or 4 hours per weekend. It's slow, yeah, but it's the same rate plenty of other projects move at. I was working with fots on PurePure a while back and he definitely isn't any faster than me. Can't all be Ixrec.

Also, it's like 3500 lines I'm doing atm to finish Sora's route, not 2000.

Unless the company plans to release their titles officially in English, there is no reason you should give a fuck. No Japanese company is going to use their already strained resources from the weak domestic market to stop a fan translation, they just wish for the group to quietly stop. If you quietly stop, they are happy and proceed as if you never existed, while if you continue you get to finish the project you thought was important enough to start, and the Japanese company will either ignore you or pass the rights on to Jast or MG who will then ask you to release it for them

When you are fantranslating something as long as these visual novels, you must have loved the material enough that you wish for more people to enjoy it, so you do what you can to achieve that goal. Disappearing to a C&D when the company has no plans of getting it translated themselves does not achieve that goal. Any fan translator must decide if they care more about the company wishes or allowing more people to play the game they personally loved enough to dedicate months or work to. I would say there is probably no correct choice here, and I won't fault a translator regardless of his choice. Obviously you would choose the former, and I fully respect that, however I'm not going to get in a bind if someone chooses the latter.

>> No.7915623

Why should anyone give a shit if some random suit doesnt like the idea of dirty gaijins playing their superior nipponese games?

>> No.7915625

I think it's more important to show respect to the creators of the work, not the suits behind the company that just send out letters because they don't want their intellectual property tampered with. I don't really give a shit what they think.

If I got a C&D from the actual writer, I'd follow it.

>> No.7915626 [DELETED]

NNL ignored the C&D, they are working to release minori games with minori themselves, and even got a contact to the president of the minori.

A team got a C&D for Kara no Shoujo and found that the company would be willing to release into English, so instead of ignoring or disappearing, we got Kara no Shoujo from MangaGamer

Other groups got C&D and disappeared, all their efforts silently died.

>> No.7915630

>>7915616
Your analysis would be accurate if people didn't translate games just to say that they were the ones to translate that awesome game.
So it's not really they want more people to enjoy it but to know they have the game thanks to them, regardless of the actual creator's wishes, which I find incredibly petty.

How long have you been a regular in these threads?

>> No.7915660 [DELETED]

>>7915630
Your point would be more valid if they were only holding off because they didn't want someone else to translate it. When there is a C&D and the company has no plans to release it themselves, then it's not a question of "I want to be the person who translates this", but rather "This may never be translated by anyone if I stop now"

Also, you seem to be confusing the company's lawyer with the writers, artists, and composers.

So, tell me. How can we discern whether the C&D came from the artist or just some company d-bag that caved into pressure from 2ch or isolationist bs? Ultimately, it would depend on the artist's intentions as well. If it happened to be anything like any of the reasons I listed above, then his/her opinion is rendered void on that basis that such a person is an asshole. Stop acting like the artist is a victim without knowing the details of each C&D.

>> No.7915805

>>7915785
Is there really any good reason for the artist to want to stop a translation project if they don't even plan on licensing it? People say it could hurt future sales if they ever do, or something, but JAST seem pretty intent on proving that theory wrong, so it will be interesting to see how that turns out.

>> No.7915853

>If it happened to be anything like any of the reasons I listed above, then his/her opinion is rendered void on that basis that such a person is an asshole

This. Liking a creation does not mean that you also must like the creator, or hold his opinions as especially good or sacred. Even less so for the faceless suits in legal departments who actually make the decisions about C&Ds.

"Doing it for e-penis" is something that happens only when said action does not take too much effort. Fansubs are very often made for e-penis as it only requires translation of a small amount of lines per week, and you get e-penis directly supplied every week.

VN translation, on the other hand, is tons of work, and you only get a small bit of e-penis at the very end when you've finished the project. A tiny amount of e-penis, usually even less than what you get for an anime episode because of the small target audience, for months and months of hard work. I have never seen a legitimate project done for e-penis complete successfully (although I have seen the opposite; translators leaving the scene because their months of hard work was only rewarded with ungrateful fucks bitching about it).

Projects started for e-penis go in one of two directions:
1. They translate a bunch of stuff, realize how much work it is and abandon the project.
2. They sacrifice translation quality to reduce the effort it takes, to make the effort worth the e-penis (usually through machine translation).

Although #2 is a strongly increasing phenomenon (people who read such "translations" and thank the translators for it, yes, that is your fault), it still isn't nearly representative of the translation community at all.

But also with VN translations you're pretty much assured to be the only person who translated it, so every time you see a thread on it from that point forward you can feel a little swelling of pride, knowing it's your work they're reading.

Regardless though, Ixrec says "but we might return to some form of community interaction as a possible means of selection." to figure out what to translate besides Forest. You sure it's longer? On Erogamescape Dive 2 alone is 80+ hours. Maybe it's the gameplay that lengthens things (but then it also requires that you translate the interface, which may be near-impossible depending on the engine).

I suppose e-peen would be more of a result than a goal. It's not really top priority for me. Same with working with EveTaku or Aho-Taku, really. For example, I put more effort into Ro-Kyu-Bu! because I legitimately liked the series. Well, Chaos;Head Noah's engine was practically the same as Chaos;Head's, making hacking not extremely difficult. If we're lucky, the same could apply to Ever17 and Dunamis15, considering they're from the same company. A bigger problem is the fact that there's no torrent for Dunamis15 on the entire web, despite the game having been released 10 days ago. I don't know how to use Japanese P2P programs, so I can't check if it has a known engine myself...

The game is available for both the 360 and PS3. I checked out the data on the PS3 version but it's pretty useless since I don't think there's a way to decrypt newer EBOOT.BIN files. I'm grabbing the 360 version now. From the looks of it the data is the same (.psb and .psbm files), and I also found a reference to "script/main.nut" which is the same format the Sonico used for its scripts. It's also compiled with the same VM thing as Sonico, Squirrel (http://squirrel-lang.org/)) so it might be a modified version of that engine. Not sure yet.

The archives are in the following format:
Head:
4 bytes - "mfl\0"
dword - decompressed size

Followed by compressed data. The *_info.psb.m file probably has all of the information for figuring out filenames and stuff in the *_body.psb files. From what I saw in the body files, each file is separately compressed so you can find multiple "mfl\0" headers.

I'll poke around in the XEX but I suck at compressions and I'm noob at PPC so I might not get very far.

Not sure but I definitely do.
Complaining about ero in porno game is stupid.
Lets be honest, the main reason why we play eroge is obviously because there is porn on top of good story/plot. Make a great combination. Of course all ages is good as well if the story is good on its own merit but saying how ero is holding the back the medium is pretty dumb.
They might as well just read a book since that is basically what they all want.

This may be true for you, but it is not true for everybody. For some people the porn is a positive factor, but for others it may be a negative factor. Allow me to explain.

First of all, while you could argue on a basic level that sex scenes fit naturally into a love story, most eroge leave that way behind, almost seeking to out-do each other in perversion and indecency (I'm sure I don't have to list the various forms of perversion that are available in many of these games)

It has always been said that if there is any merit in a pornographic game, the game will still stand on its own as a good game with those elements removed. I think this has been proven correct because there have been so many popular visual novel adaptations for the Dreamcast/PS2/360/PSP etc.

But you are free to read what you want, as I am free to translate what I want, so...

People have sex all the time, i know this might be an alien concept to you people but beneath the surface of society there's a world of casual sex. But seriously, giving characters a sex life always improves them, in any medium, makes them more realistic, less one dimensional.
Sure you're in the obligatory summer festival with your tsundere imouto in that catch a goldfish game but last night you were fucking her throat in earnest and with that you (the player) see her in a different light, as a person with many facets of life, not just a tsunblob following you all day or a fleshlight.
Take the Yosuga no Sora adaptation, the sex improved the anime immensely, without it you have the usual boring eroge adaptation like the recent Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi.
So yeah, sex is good.

Oh, I'm fine with sex in fiction in general.
I'm not fine with sex in eroge, because the way it's presented nine times out of ten(and that's a generously low percentage) is immature, demeaning, and comparable in writing to a run of the mill porn movie. Anyone deluding themselves that it improves the characters in any way whatsoever has got to have a completely skewed image of what sex is actually like.

Also, I'm not arguing that there are no sex scenes that serve a purpose other that being masturbation material, but vast majority of them are handled in such a clumsy and cliched manner that the whatever the desired impression might be is thoroughly ruined - to the point that if the sex scenes weren't there in the first place, but were instead just acknowledged or alluded to, the end result would be quite superior.
ML as a whole is a pretty big offender in that regard, though it's not completely devoid of acceptable scenes - the ero is definitely not the biggest problem I have with it.

How do you save? Can I just not do it yet or something? I have a compulsion to save every thirty seconds and I'm not ok with this.

in the version I played you can save only when you can choose actions, not when there's dialogue going on.

You save during down time. You will know when it is when you see system instead of talk/look/etc..

I started working on it (posted earlier in the thread about it a little bit) but was going really slow since it's a real bitch. However, asmodean finished his tool and it works nicely now so there's no need for me to continue unless I want to decompile the scripts. Tool: http://asmodean.reverse.net/misc/_/exm2lib.zip

The engine encrypts lzx compressed data and then the PSB files are a bunch of serialized data. It's a really stupid format that really is more work than it's worth.

From what I can tell their plans were to release it on the PS3, Xbox 360, and the PSP and possibly on the PC. The 360 and PS3 versions are already out obviously but in the startup scripts you can find some references to setting modes for the PSP and PC. To further this idea for the PC, the game looks like it was possibly originally developed on the Kirikiri 2 engine.

Some things I did find interesting when I was poking around though was that they stole code from Kirikiri 2. I documented what I found but I didn't feel like combing through everything so it's just a tiny bit.

Random things: http://privatepaste.com/5945f38944
Action.tjs (krkr2's kag3ex): http://privatepaste.com/caaa007e0b
action.nut (dunamis15's scripting): http://privatepaste.com/4656b7ab32

Kirikiri 2 is dual licensed and with the first being GPL2 and the second being a custom license. I don't feel my Japanese is good enough to interpret legal stuff so I'm not going to. License can be found here: https://sv.kikyou.info/trac/kirikiri/browser/kirikiri2/branches/2.32stable/license.txt

So yeah, this is pretty amusing.

I've head that downtime in the last part of the game can even last half an hour.

>> No.7934016

>>7933999
yeah, there's pretty long segments and you can save only a few times in between.
By that time you'll be dying to know what happens next though so it's not much of a problem.

As far as i know, XBOX is just PC in console form so it can be that they just ported KikiKiri and that's all.

From everything I've seen, this is not a port of Kirikiri. It wouldn't really make much sense for it to be one since they completely changed the core.

Looking at it some more. The scenario scripts seem to be a compiled form of .ks scripts from kirikiri 2. In particular ones filename is "testeffect.ks.scn". You can also see "*start" at the beginning of the string tables at the bottom of the .txt.scn scripts. Might look into a way to parse these but I'm not expecting much.

It might not be a direct port but it seems they based their engine on Kirikiri 2 at least.

So can you make a port or is it not possible?

It's possible but probably not worth the effort. From what I can tell the game logic is stored in the .nut scripting and some .psb files so it'd just be a matter of turning the data into something readable by another engine or making a new engine for the game.

The engine itself seems pretty simple outside of the PSB junk so reimplementing it would probably be a pretty easy task if you aren't new to doing graphics code. There's 33 classes in total with probably a couple hundred functions in between them and it's easy to document what functions go to what classes. A lot of stuff isn't even used so not everything would need to be implemented.

To port it to another engine it'd require rewriting a good bit of the code in the .nut files since they rely heavily on PSB functions. All of the data would also need to be converted from PSB to their original formats.

Note that everything except the .nut scripting is in the PSB format and each type of file needs to be handled differently.
