I remember back in the days I always thought how healing was for plebs and white mages where a waste of a perfectly fine party slot.
I always wanted to crush everything before having to be healed.
And then I came to wonder why RPGs were always such a grindfest.

Nothing much, they're a subclass for a reason.
FFTA white mages are pretty good though

Your childhood probably means RBY and there's nothing wrong with all-attack teams on RBY. In fact, Thunder Wave, Softboiled, Recover and Rest were just about the only good non-offensive moves.

That, and matches were exclusively determined by whose Tauros/Persian dies first. RBY, so good.

They resurrect dead party members. You can win boss fights with severely underleveled characters by just reviving every character he insta-kills. With their protective magic you can protect your party from party annihilation attacks, too.
I'm not much of a grinding fan, so I tend to finish RPGs at a way lower level than is recommended. Healing, reviving and protecting are essential for that.

They're good for all the reasons mentioned, but they're also the only class that can equip masamune, which makes them broken -- suddenly they're good at dealing damage on top of everything that made them good before.

Heals, Esuna, Protect, Shield, etc. for support and finally Holy for damage.

They can cast ruse on themselves and solo Chaos without even promoting.

Butterfree wasn't useless. I would put Psychic on it and have it use its sleep spore thing to put stuff to sleep and then psychic them to death.

I miss the RBY days of ember/flame thrower/fire spin/fire blast
