I have been out of the genre for a month or so. The problem I had with LoL is that it was good casual fun, but as soon as I wanted something more out of it things didn't work out. I played HoN to make up for that, but I got tired of games being decided on the pick screen. Dota2... If I wanted to play with delay I'd play on servers on another continent. I've embarrassed myself plenty of times on Nevermore and Lina because of this.

Has anything changed since?

They've more or less fixed the delay on DotA2 (if we're talking about the actual delay, and not delay like on lina's stun... that's normal).

I play it every now and then but if you have a legacy HoN account, I don't know why you'd ever want to play DotA2.

If you have a HoN legacy and want a serious, competitive game, go for HoN. If you don't have a legacy account and don't feel like wasting any kind of money and don't want to grind for years, play DotA2.

If you want casual fun, play LoL.
