Don't pick one over another, never limit your selection to just one site. There's always things on Dan that are not available on Gel and Pixiv, and vice versa.
Conclusion: if you're serious in expanding your collection then use them all.

Personally I bounce between the two. Danbooru has better tags and translations, but Gelbooru has more content and everything that appears on Danbooru is mirrored in Gelbooru. I just use whichever is best for my needs at the time.

This is easily the most common misconception regarding the two boorus. Not everything on Dan also exists on Gel.
Don't believe it? Try searching any of these tags on both Dan and Gel:
karanak
feguimel
stanley_lau
sigurdhosenfeld
karbo
and many more non-Japanese artists whose images on Gel got removed just because they're not Japanese.

Well OK, there's Gelbooru's rather bizarre rule of no non-japanese stuff, but that's why I go between the two. But Gelbooru automatically puts up everything it sees on Danbooru, so most of what's on Dan is on Gel. Gel just has a weaker tagging and translating force.

Upload images that don't suck, search for images that need tagging, or translate things.

It's not hard to get a privileged account. ~80% of them are given out for free to people who participate beyond favoriting and commenting (what an admin told me).

Hell, I even got contributor pretty damn easily.
