gonna be hitting up tokyo soon, thinking about taking the skyliner from narita. Is it worth the extra $?

If you are coming with a visa exception than the best way to go is to get the suika x nex card which costs 3500 one way / 5500 rt but is really 1500 yen less since you get that much deposited in the suika card. Otherwise, the keisei skyliner is the cheapest way to go.

You can get the suika x nex at narita airport soon after taking the stairs/escalator downstairs. Passport is required.

>> No.8814847

>>8814822
I already have a suica.

The regular express on the Keisei line only costs 1000 yen.

>> No.8814861

Buy the skyliner+tokyo metro 1day pass.
It is like 2000+.
Then use it to go to Akihabara/Nakano for the whole day.

If you arent hurting for time, take the express. It is a bit a pain if you arent comfortable navigating japanese train stations though. However, usually incoming flights from the US at least arrive late afternoon, meaning if you are staying in a hostel, you need to get there before check in is over.

Theres a lot of regular commuters that use the keisei narita line and it can get crowded at certain hours, but getting a seat will be no problem since the airport is terminal.

Skyliner > NEX.
For one it is faster and the last station is in Ueno.
If you are going to the west and south side, it is better to just take NEX. Trade in your suica and get NEX+suica.
Also ueno is gonna be crowded like fuck for this 2weeks.

Probably 10x as crowded as Asakusa since it is apparently full bloom in Ueno already.

it goes like 140km/h or some shit right? that's pretty cool.

Not going until well after hanami, and not going to Ueno other than to change trains so no problem.

>>8814885
Whats fascinating about it? It runs the same track as the NEX so the scenery will be the same. Both are comfortable and reserved seats. The keisei main line runs a different track and as you know, is the cheapest.

If you are going to south tokyo, I belive NEX goes through Shinagawa, making it the better choice.

You know /n/ has decayed hardcore when people have to post train threads on /jp/ because /n/ has been completely overrun by fixie hipster fags.

I used to hang out all the time at /n/, back when it was about tra/n/sportation and not about cycli/n/g, back when it was about trains, rolling stock, subways, tramways, a car every now and then, transportation infrastructure, airplanes and shit.

Bad luck had it that I joined right when fixie hipster faggots started creeping into /n/, because 4chan was the new hot internet shit of today with Anonymous's attacks against big corporate websites, joining that board was saying with their actions "look at how deck and trendy I am", but /b/ was way too hardcore for them and /n/ was not only tamer but relevant to their love for fixie bikes that are impossible to cycle with yet they insist on using it because it made them so unique and shit.

I tried to move to 1chan, but that place is deserted and the few activity that is there is mostly one retard shitposting and all the other retards jumping in a flurry of searing flames. The people there are so pathetic that one dude that was flamed away from my old forum was at one point moderator of 1chan. He was a complete idiot, and yet he still had more composture and discipline than most of the people of 1chan.

And thus ended my love for trains, which grew up in France as I saw actual rail infrastructure for the first time in my life (unlike Mexican trains, which literally only serve for hauling cargo and Central American migrants across major cities).

;_;

To cheer myself up I'm posting an Odakyu Romancecar 10000, the name comes from its loveseat-like seats. They used to run Odakyu's lines from Tokyo to nearby mountain resorts and beaches. Right since the day of its launch the Series 3000 broke the world speed record for narrow-gauge trains, which paved the way to the beginning of the Shinkansen, which paved the beginning of Le TGV and Der ICE, which paved the beginning of El AVE, Il Frecchiarossa, The Accela, and pretty much every other high speed rail service in the world.

I have more preference for French trains (my favorites are the TGV Réseau and the Z 20500 from Paris's RER C and D and most Transilien lines), but at this point any train will do. I'm not really acquainted with Japanese trains though.

This is an E-231 series EMU on the Yamanote line, one of the busiest lines of all Japan. It moves like 3 million people every day between Tokyo's busiest districts: Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ikebukuro.

I'm pretty sure that the story about station staff having to push people inside the trains is true because in Mexico City it actually happens, and Mexico City is like half the size of Tokyo. Only difference is, in Mexico City the passengers do it instead of the staff.

My experience with sleeper trains is limited to 2 rides I've taken. One from northern France to the south which was 6 bunks per room, fortunately I was sharing only with my parents at the time. The other time, however was in China on a 30 hour train ride. Literally spooning with hundreds of old, and quite frankly smelly Chinese who were all fascinated with me because I'm foreign has pretty much put me off sleeper trains. Your picture, on the other hand looks a little more up-market than my experiences.

Wow, I didn't know the sleeper trains in Europe were cramped like that. The one in China is understandable though.

If money isn't a huge issue, you can get a "deluxe" room on the sunrise express as well. It comes with a bed, desk, sink and a shower, but it costs around ~15000yen IIRC. The normal rooms were very comfy though.... I'm 6'4" (193cm) tall and had a good sleep.

Also, there are "lounge" cars on the train where there are seats facing towards the windows and vending machines for drinks. I stayed in my room most of the time though....

From Tokyo to Osaka it is about 7 hours, but you can take the train all the way to Takamatsu as this vid illustrates:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJn4jEx6zoU
Sunrise over the seto inland sea is quite pretty.

BTW if you don't want to pay for a room, these as the free (with JR pass) "nobinobi" sleeper cars, where it is community sleeping. There is a curtain to separate each person.

I think this is the spot you are looking for, overlooking the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line:
35.699900, 139.765914
If you go a little to the west (35.699935, 139.765647) and go to street view, a number of the photos taken from that location seem to match what you are looking for.

I actually took a sleeper train once. I was 15 at the time, it was a Corail Lunéa train from Paris to the border with Spain at La Tour de Carol. From there we grabbed a shuttle to Puigcerdà in Catalunya and then a Spaniard train to Barcelona.

It was alright, we were 5 with family and we shared the room with a Colombian girl. The bunk was pretty well-designed, it was small but pretty comfortable.

The one train I would kill for riding is the iDNiGHT. which is a French night train with bar, lounge, and a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. Among travelers it's easier to strike up chatter with random strangers, so it would be cool as all fuck to meet someone there.

A bar and lounge I guess are kind of standard for most trains but it just seems a little short of space to fit that, along with a DJ on to a train. Interesting, nonetheless.

Aside from my Chinese sleeper train journey, the rest have been great. My favourite was from London to Paris on the Eurostar. I got a free upgrade to 1st class and that's certainly luxurious. I had an entire table for 4 to myself and what seemed like my own personal waiter since it was so quiet.

Thought I'd just say I went there today, there's quite a nice spot on the path there to watch the trains go by, or on the bridge above. You get a good view of the station there too, I was impressed. It was only about a 10 minute walk from Akihabara station.

Toward Ochanomizu, that's the station in the picture. I just went out of the electric town exit in akiba, walked past the Sega building and pretty much follow the road straight, keeping the river on your left, you soon come out to the point where you can see the river and the train tunnel, it's a very quick walk. Going to Ochanomizu would be a simpler way of getting there however, since you'd come out pretty much where I took that picture.

The trains don't run 24/7. They stop ~midnight and start up again ~6am.

Also, you would probably get used to the noise after a while, they aren't that loud....
