I would let him sit under my table so that I can warm my feet on his body while I'm browsing the internet. I would also let him snuggle up with me in bed when I'm about to sleep, then kick him out on the floor when I get enough of him.

Dogs need regular walking unless your property is big enough and you don't mind shit everywhere.

And when you do walk your dog in most parts of the world these days you have to actually pick up the shit after it.

Cats are better by the sheer virtue of low maintenance.
But one warning to all the NEETs out there who want a pet - pets get sick too. If you grow attached to your pet, and he gets sick in a way that requires expensive treatment that you can't afford, shit's going to suck big time.
