Is anyone else on /jp/ a fan of glitch art? I find it beautiful. It is a form of art which originated in '90s Japan.

Yes, it is. It's a form of technological surrealism.

How about glitch music?

I wish I knew how to make this stuff. One of my friends makes a lot of neat images that look glitched up. They're CRAZY

i'm working on a thing to pixelate and then insert noise into an image, haven't thought of it as glitch art though

not very /jp/ related unfortunately

I doubt it, this stuff has been pretty common in the demoscene as far back as the 80s.

I love it myself OP and do it, but I hate using the term "art" with it. It's too abstract in either its creation or appreciation for that. It's like a mandelbrot set...it looks nice but it's a mathematical fractal.

I'd link my site but I don't wanna.

>> No.8866238

Too hipster.

Not OP, but I'd like to see some work and a rundown of methodologies.

Glitch "art" has interested me for a while--I really wish I knew how to go about making stuff on my own.

>> No.8866284

Seems like pretentious hipster shit to me, but hey, if you enjoy it, you enjoy it.

Well, to make it you basically just need to manipulate the data in some form or another but keep it readable.

This can be things like, editing image files in a hex editor. Using text editors like notepad, wordpad etc to insert "junk" data. Transfer and then break transfers of data...such as uploading to FTPs and cancelling, or using different methods of encoding (ASCII etc). You can also use sound editors, video editing software and so on. You can even transfer data over frayed/broken cables and glitch it that way, like videos and such.

So long as you can edit the data but not ruin it, it will spit out unique results each time. You have to mind what you edit, though or you can ruin a file. So for example if you're editing a jpeg in a hex editor but break the header it might not open again.

Try playing around with XVi32 (hex editor) to get some simple ideas.

Also, Audicity is another good program for messing with just images. Here is an interesting blog article about it, though kinda basic: http://blog.animalswithinanimals.com/2008/08/databending-and-glitch-art-primer-part.html

Once you know what you're doing as well, you can start to use specific data only. Such as picking out colours, certain parts of an image and so on. Mind you most of these methods are pretty basic, and there are way better ways of doing glitch stuff including working with your own circuits in breadboards.
