It's also important to pick your battles. For example, decimate is a lost cause. I know what it originally means, but there's no longer much cause in the modern world to use it in its original form, so if we sought to preserve it precisely as it was, it would quickly drop from the English language. However, I strive to maintain the distinction between jealous and envious, because they have distinct meanings from one another that are both relevant and useful in the modern day, so to see the meaning of jealousy slowly conflated with the meaning of envy does no-one good because it unduly restricts language and, thus, thought.

For example:
I jealously guard my waifu from glaring eyes.
I envy my waifu's awesome rack.

That's a distinction made possible by the meanings as they should stand, and a distinction that I fear may be lost as envy slowly erodes and is simultaneously replaced by jealousy.

Check your browser's font list. In Firefox it's something like Edit > Preferences > Content > Fonts & Colors. Just check if Mona is there (and maybe set it to your default font to see if it works).

Also if you've just installed it, you might need to run fc-cache or restart X. And make sure it's mona (fonts-mona, ttf-mona, or similar) and not Monapo.

They've fixed that now but it's still unbelievable how such an obvious mistake wouldn't be noticed before, unless they never looked at the output they're generating.

Still not a fan of the redundant postnumbers everywhere (10+ times per post) and forcing a div to act like a span. I can sort of see the reasoning behind it (access to the components of one post) but one ID lookup for e.g. p9008035 and then child node traversal for each post is going to be more efficient than multiple ID lookups involving a num->string conversion + concatenation each. A cursory inspection of WK/Firefox show they use a hash table, which is good, but nothing can beat following a single pointer to get the first child/sibling/parent/etc.

You are so funny Cudder. Try writing a userscript for 4chan or any other website and you'll understand why you shouldn't rely on children, siblings and parents.

Hell, why even use ids in the first place? All you have to do is start from document.body and dig your way to wherever you want, right?

CudderSelectors v0.2
REchan `Barely' Working Group

All DOM nodes shall be expressed as a 2-byte
sequence composed of two values:
0. the numerical index of a top-level node;
1. its nth child.
in the hexadecimal form 0xiinn.
Values over 255 are not supported because
that would be bloat.

CHANGELOG:
v0.2 -- Removed hyphen between values,
reduced filesizes by as much as
12 bytes.

If your reason is anything other than "because the structure may change" (which is what your second paragraph seems to imply), then you should probably reconsider --- 4chan didn't change its post structure for nearly TEN years, and would've passed that mark if it weren't for this recent jolt.

>All you have to do is start from document.body and dig your way to wherever you want, right?
Notice how I wrote "post structure" --- on 4chan the stuff before that does change semi-regularly and not in predictable ways, so you should use an id lookup to get to that fixed structure.

I don't get this obsession with userscripts anyway. I like(d) 4chan precisely because it isn't full of frivolous crap like most regular forums. I want to read and write posts and that's all they should be catering to here.

I only hope that this won't lead down the slippery slope to eternal minor changes for no real good reason other than to create work.

This I agree with. I don't have a problem with people using userscripts, I just don't see why you would. It's not hating convenience or anything like that, it's just the Web 1.0 way of using pages, refreshing your browser, and other things built into your browser feels like a more fun way to browse. And it's apparently how image boards are "supposed" to be browsed (why bother having a page 0 if you're just going to set thread X, Y and Z to auto-refresh?).

There are image boards full of that type of stuff, vanilla. Obviously they're all crap, but I'm sure there's a market for them.

Someone should write a 4chan userscript that adds avatars and points and stuff. This isn't a joke, I'd like to see it done (in a masochistic way).

I know, and I imagine it's the same there. They even argue about the same stuff we do. Not sure about Futaba, but 2channel even has its own dedicated clients.

I just think the way it's set up, it's a healthier way of browsing. Like turning off a spell checker to improve your spelling. Or something. I don't know my own argument.

You should've just said that that was a moot point.

I thought the point of these things was that they're so bloated with features that you would only ever need to use one? Just like antivirus vendors aren't going to care if someone tries to use their product along with another --- in many cases they explicitly recommend against it.

>It's always the same thing, "If I don't need something, then nobody should need it".
Or rather, everyone using 4chan shouldn't. Anonymous posting and image uploading is available on tons of other forum software; if you don't like the minimalism of imageboards, then 4chan is not for you.

>>9008035,16
>>9008035,17
>And it's apparently how image boards are "supposed" to be browsed
Definitely. All the image macros and memes involving F5 show that it's part of the normative culture.

A quick search shows that there's no "official 2chan extension", so they don't encourage that sort of stuff themselves.

My limited exposure to the majority of Japanese websites shows they have a very different perspective on website design, more in line with my views of pragmatism and stability than the "let's make more work for ourselves by instigating change and emphasising only the ostensible benefits" the English side has been leaning toward.

>they're so bloated with features that you would only ever need to use one?
That's not how a tech enthusiast/programmer should think. When was the last time you used your brain before posting?
It's about annoying things, not ``features''. For example, the first thing that comes to mind is the stylesheet flicker on page load if you use a Burichan/Futaba theme, which is fixable in 10 lines of code. There are plenty of other stuff that you can only notice if you actually post on 4chan more than once a week.

>Definitely. All the image macros and memes involving F5 show that it's part of the normative culture.
They have a built-in catalog view and everytime 4chan is mentioned on futaba, there always people bitching about how 4chan is unbrowsable without it.

>> No.9008035,22 [INTERNAL]

>That's not how a tech enthusiast/programmer should think.
I don't care what you think someone else should think, but if you were writing a 4chan extension wouldn't it be natural to want a monopoly for it? I've read about all the different ones and it's often the case that they're competing with each other for features. They don't want you to use any other, they want you to use theirs and theirs alone. It's a line of thinking quite common in the software industry.

>For example, the first thing that comes to mind is the stylesheet flicker on page load if you use a Burichan/Futaba theme, which is fixable in 10 lines of code.
I use Burichan and I have never had any of the "flicker" you describe, although I've set it up so that the page stylesheet is forced to that before it even reaches a browser --- any browser --- on my system. And YOU should be "the one to use your brain before posting" because FYI I post on 4chan almost daily. The majority is not on /jp/, and I don't use nonanonymous outside of /jp/ either.

>They have a built-in catalog view and everytime 4chan is mentioned on futaba, there always people bitching about how 4chan is unbrowsable without it
Adding that would've been a much better idea than rewriting everything else, and taken a lot less time. However, if someone is being paid to do it, then rewriting everything would be, economically, a more desirable choice than the few minutes adding a catalog feature would take. Even more so if they put in some bugs (deliberately or not) and have to take more time fixing them, introducing even more bugs, etc. [I am not omitting the possibility that if they were to add a catalog page, they would still try to overcomplicate things to achieve this effect. Something like what 2chan has needn't take more than ~100 lines of code, and likely could be done in considerably less --- My estimate is 50 but I have not done it yet so don't hold me on these nunbers.] Throw in some arguments about how doing this is ostensibly better, and the majority of the people these days wouldn't see past that veil.

If you're going to be so specific as to include different cases, why not include things like "sageru" or "sausage"? They all sage under the poorly-written regex (which is why "nokosage" works).

"Pure" regular expressions might be OK since they're linear-time but the extra stuff like backreferences make it NP-complete.

There's no parent selector for CSS, and it was for persformance reasons. As far as I know that is not NP-complete, but it's still resource intensive to process.

tl;dr: DO NOT WANT.

It's why non-backreferencing engines exhibit significantly better performance than the Big Guns (Perl, PCRE, etc.).

Speaking of CSS, XPath has a parent (and even ancestor) axis. With new selectors being introduced, CSS and XPath are fast becoming two sides of the same coin.

The only significant difference between the two for me are a HTML-specific affinity for class selectors, which takes a bit of wrangling to do in XPath, which on the other hand contains its powerful axes, including an ancestor axis.
