figured i'd ask the /jp/ board. i'm from /k/ and a little of /sp/. i won a raffle to go on a hunting trip (for moose) in japan of all places. i've never been to japan, and i'm curious if there's anything i should know about importing my firearms and ammunition availability.

also if anyone here has gone after large game in japan or china or whereever and if it's significantly different from north american game.

pic related, i'll be taking a 1903 springfield with some jsp .30-06 180gr

In before 50 "/jp/ doesn't know or care about Japan" responses followed by a bunch of people who know and care about Japan.

Wait... there are moose in Japan?

>> No.9520672

I know gun control is really strict over there, but other than that, I can't really help you.

You might try over at /trv/ though.

Yes, they have giant moose with sharp pointy teeth. Only like 20% of moose hunters there come back alive.

No, seriously.

Nobody here would know about this shit, much less about indigenous wildlife. If you want to talk about kawaii gun girl anime, theres >>>/a/ for that. If you want to talk about Reisen, you're in the right place.

well, i assume it's like hunting in any other country. i've been through canadian, african, and indian customs without trouble. japan can't be that different in that respect.

>>9520669
indeed there are! introduced through russia, they are smaller and hardier than north american versions, a bit closer to mule deer and the like the rocks, making hunting them closer to rock climbing in some places.

>>9520672
oh well, i figured i'd try the /jp/ board since it seemed more japan-centric than general traveling. i know deer hunting and fowling are popular in some areas of japan, and IIRC it's handguns that are super restricted - shotguns and rifles are ok. miroku and howa of japan are great arms manufacturers and i have a howa-made Tikka rifle.

>> No.9520703

I'm not sure about firearm laws in Japan, but I think they are pretty strict.

I don't think you will be able to import your rifle at all. If anything, your best bet is to look for a hunting reserve in japan that offers guides.

What if he wants to talk about kawaii moose ?

I wouldn't bet on that.

>> No.9520707

You aren't bringing your own guns into the country. It's 100% illegal there. They'll probably supply you with a rifle once you get there.

>> No.9520712

Rifles are legal, but I know nothing of caliber or carrying method restrictions.
I'm sure whoever arranged this trip should know something.

The plural of "moose" is "meese" you morons.

i was offered a browning citori or a beretta silver hawk to use there, but they said that the hunting permit allowed my own longarm to be imported strictly for the scope of the permit. that's not dissimilar from US or UK hunting laws, honestly. i've emailed a few people and am mostly just waiting on an official word back (tomorrow since the offices are closed over the weekend).

Using it singular to refer to the specie as a whole also works.

If you're hunting moose, you absolutely want a rifle. The shotguns they offer are great, but not for big game. I'm surprised they don't offer rifles in the first place.

I guess you could always try to bushido its ass with a katana or something.

i'm familiar with deer hunting and have read up on moose. the rifles they offered were a T3 in 7mm and some .270 i think. I would prefer to take my tried and true 1903 with me, and i prefer my S&B scope over the leupold both the other rifles came with. just a preference.

what are you doing on /jp/ anyway, boof, instead of /k/?

>> No.9520793

>>9520782
I'd go with the T3 anyway, 7mm shoots flatter and hits just about as hard as 30-06. Not to mention you won't have to deal with all the hassle of bringing your gun. The T3 is a fantastic rifle.

I'm everywhere. You just have to believe in me.

Dear hunting is actively encouraged in Japan. That's the only thing I know.

>> No.9521039 [DELETED]

I heard that Japan hates guns. They have crazy laws for hunters to own firearms, but for everyone else, guns are completely illegal. They even have regular checkups from the police to make sure there isn't any hidden weapons in any house. I say it's not worth it.
