So I'm going on deployment for 7-9 months I'll be stuck on an aircraft carrier for that time I was thinking about trying to learn some japanese on my own. I'll have access to my laptop. Internet on the ship is a joke and your not allowed to plug your personal computer to it anyway.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Japanese in Mangaland is a joke. Seriously, don't waste your time with it.

Learning from Genki I and II are good for starters, but you will NEED to speak it to a native speaker regularly once you grasp the basics. I repeat, you NEED to speak it with someone. Don't just sit around studying the books, learning words and grammar. Find someone on said ship to converse with.

If you have no conversational partner, audio from the Genki books or Anime could be a sort of replacement, but conversing with fluent Japanese-speakers is crucial.

This guy is great with languages, watch his TED talk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yhnWnR1g7M)) or read his blog (http://www.fluentin3months.com/learner-faq/).).

He hasn't learned Japanese yet, but he knows Chinese, Irish, and a ton of other languages by speaking them. His methods work well and he's obviously doing something right. Learn from him.

To be honest I could give less of a shit what america does in the long run I'm basicly using the navy to fund my hobbies and getting money for college. Without being in the navy I wouldn't have been able to afford a new car and anime figs. Its a retarded easy job.

Everyone has different ways of absorbing japanese language details for the purpose of learning the japanese language. Thus, the person is wrong who said that written study book methods such as Japanese in Mangaland is trash. It is a reasonably written series of books and has practical advice in addition to lessons.

There is not just one way to learn, so that guy who said to find a speaker and practice with him is giving UNKNOWLEDGEABLE and bad advice that is not tailored for your situation on the carrier. First, you don't have that much spare time and when you do that, you are wasting that guy's time as he also has to match his free time to your scheduled free time.

If you have so much free time anyways, you should be using it to take the lessons onboard to improve your Rating. You do want to improve your Rating, don't you? Of course you do.

Well OS3 was a 95% success rate last exam cycle and I have an EP going into this exam cycle so I'm not to worried. Only other thing I need to worry about is getting my EAWS pin but after I get those things taken care of I would like to try to start learning japanese with my free time. As an OS we work about 6 hours on and 12 hours off so when I do have a bit of free time it would be nice to try to start learning japanese.

A lot of americans join the US Military because of its medical plan that covers both treatment and medicines for the entire family and even after retirement from the military. The military also has a pension plan which many corporations do not (a 401K is not a employer's pension plan).

I know one person (slightly) who joined the US military because he has a child with an expensive medical condition which would eventually bankrupt his family (and then the child would go untreated and die after that). This way, the child is taken care of by the US government until the age of 26.

In the usa, despite the economic downturn and lots of home foreclosures and home bankruptcies, the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy remained medical expenses. That should show you how terrible medicine is for the poor in the USA. Of course, the wealthy and middle class don't want to subsidize medical care or medicines for the poor. The republicans will get around to fixing this sooner or later by implementing a voucher system whose actual main purpose is to get around one of the prior supreme court rulings concerning disabled and handicapped. That's because the top 5% of consumers of US Gov't subsidized medical care eat approx 50% of the entire budget. The voucher system would normalize a lot of those people out (thus they would die much sooner).
