I'm planning a 'trip' to Japan in December '08. I'm a 20 year old resident of California; United States citizen. I've set aside $1500 thus far, but I plan to have $5000 set aside by that time. Orally, my Japanese is intermediate, but I can't read Kanji worth shit (only about 200 characters).

I'm planning on staying there for the full 3 months that a tourist visa will allow. My main focus is to become a Gaijin model, but I'd ultimately need a sponsor to make that possible. I've heard Harajuku is a popular location for models to congregate, so I've decided to find a Gaijin house or hostel in the area if at all possible.

My questions being:
-Are there any other locations other than Harajuku that might grant me better exposure as an aspiring gaijin model?
-Is it possible to pay for housing/food for 3 months with $5000? (hostel or gaijin house)
-Are there any gaijin friendly sites for making contacts in Japan before making the venture? I have a mixi, but I was wondering if there was something better.
-Are there any known modeling talent agencies in California that communicate with Japan?

Why do people bring their serious questions to /jp/?

>> No.986861

you still need a degree to work in Japan, no matter what. even as a model, you need a BA in anything if you are coming from America.

reality. just go to ruppungi(sp?) and fuck mad bitches

Not true. You only need a sponsor.

Any job that Japanese residents are innately incapable of doing is considered a specialty job, and specialty jobs are awarded visas under the condition that there is a sponsor. Gaijin modeling/acting is considered a specialty job.

Amateur at best at current. I'm getting headshots done by the end of the month.

$4000 lasted me two weeks, but I went on a spending bonanza. $5000 could last you 3 months if you don't do a lot.

You're not allowed to work on a normal visitors VISA, so no modelling for you. So you're going to have to apply for a working holiday VISA or something.

possible, check room rates here:

Unfortunately, amerifags aren't granted working holiday VISAs. My intention isn't to work whilst on my tourist VISA, but simply to find a company that will sponsor me. If I can do that, then I can take a ferry to Korea, then re-enter the country on a fresh sponsored VISA.

Thank you for the link!

You'd certainly go out with a bang, but I would wait until you are a bit more popular before going for headshots.

I don't know much about modeling but I have done research in things like acting. My first piece of advice would be to do a lot of research, I cannot stress this enough and it goes for any major trip in an attempt to relocate (personal experience talking) and try to get advice from people working in the industry, not just there but here too. Secondly, any idiot can go out and get headshots and a lot of people have them. I was friends with a photographer once who relied on headshot clients to pay his rent in between his artistic gigs. This sort of sounds like a "all eggs in one basket" kind of deal so I would consider putting off the trip for a while, hiring an agent, and trying to build a real portfolio while still here.

I've lived in one of the places run by the company they linked you to. It was cheap, and there were no administrative hiccups. You may not like your housemates much, but hey.

I definitely think you can get three months of food/rent out of $5000, as I managed to eke out a living on about $1300 a month, iirc.

I wanted to do something like this as well though you seem to be further along than I am, once I get my Bachelors I was planning on building a modeling portfolio in the states first. I highly recommend this course get some low end modeling jobs here and build up a decent portfolio than consider moving on as a Gaijin model once you have experience with the industry and companies. This is what they are looking for over there.

OP as sad is it may be you probably do need to be good looking enough to be able to get shoots in the states first before you can get work in Japan.
