For using multiple lines where the original has a single line, you'll have to ask the hacker who will do the insertion. It should be possible if the hacker wants to put in the effort for it. The input format to support this will depend on what the hacker finds convenient.

Just write the translation for now, worry about in-game formatting later.

Possibly. They're line breaks, so it's your choice as the translator to retain them, move them, or omit them (though the line breaks following the speaker tags seem to be intended to separate speaker tag from normal text, best to always keep those). Judging from my little experiment manually inserting some text, the game doesn't seem to support automatic line breaking at all (so if a line is too long it just flows out of the text box), unless I missed something, so you might have to put line breaks in to keep it all in the text box (a process best done automatically using a tool) and watch out you don't use too many line breaks so the text goes past the bottom of the text box. Unless you can get a hacker to modify the font/text rendering.

From a technical viewpoint, the only requirement is that it is somehow possible to discern the order of the lines. The inserter will need to re-insert them in the right order; everything else is convenience.

Standard practice for VN translation is to keep the Japanese line in the script and write the translation below it. This will allow you to easily compare the two, which is helpful when you want to revisit a line, if someone wants to TLC a line, and so on.

In my exported scripts, I've prefixed every Japanese line with [ja][<line number>], and added a line [en][<line number>] after every line. The idea behind this is that you can write your translation after the [en][<line number>] prefix so you still have the Japanese line for comparison and so it's easy to detect which line it is for the inserter. (This also allows you to put notes (for example, to the editor) and remarks in the script file by just placing them on a line without those prefixes.)

Fuwanovel is probably your best bet. There is no set percentage to ask for an inserter; you just need to convince someone you have a decent chance of completing your project (i.e. that you are not just wasting their time), and the best way of doing so is to actually complete a significant chunk of it.

You'll have to swallow your pride and ask on Fuwanovel, they seem to have enough hackers. Source code for the extractor is at http://pastebin.com/1uB8686Y in case you ever need to hand it to a hacker or want to modify it yourself.

I make no promises of further supporting the project should it head anywhere (because I have no personal interest in this project, the game itself is old and buggy, and because I'm a novice hacker in the first place), but it should be easy enough to get a hacker to insert the scripts again if you manage to translate a decent chunk of it.

(Hacker notes: XOR with 0xFF. First 16 bytes are always the same, as are 0x30 - 0x40. All values are 4-byte integers. Pointer values must be multiplied by 4 (i.e. 0x05C4 refers to location 0x1710 in the file). Number of lines is at 0x10, pointer to line pointer table is at 0x14, line pointer table simply consists of pointers to the start of lines (null-terminated strings, no length indicator). 0x1C and 0x24 also seem to be pointers to data blocks preceded by length indicators, but I haven't really checked what they are for, nor have I checked what the stuff in-between the lines is.)

I hear this every time. "Not me, of course I'm motivated enough! How bad can it be?" And every time I hear it, the project is dropped before it even hits the 10% mark. At least you're choosing a shorter VN, but even then you're almost certainly underestimating the amount of work.

No, there is a serious shortage of (dedicated) translators, while there are far more hackers than really needed, particularly for simple projects like this one. Hacking requires some knowledge of reverse engineering and a bit of your time, while translation requires not only knowledge of both languages (and arguably writing skill) but also a HUGE time investment, and the dedication to keep up the motivation despite the long duration of the project and low payoff (although it's really grown recently, the VN community is still a lot smaller than the anime or manga community; you'll get a lot less e-penis for a lot more work (and hell, with the current state of the community, chances are you'll get more complaints than gratitude)).

It was the delete message for all Nitro+-related pages on TLWiki after JAST announced the Nitro+ partnership, after TLWiki was contacted for cooperation, but before the cooperation was announced.

Moogy was the one who made up the message and told us to use it when deleting the related pages. Technically speaking I was the first to use it (after confirming with Moogy whether he really wanted to use such a peculiar message guaranteed to cause lots of discussion), but it was soon followed by mass deletions from other TLWiki admins.

Moogy is the founder and main admin of TLWiki, the mass deletions were carried out by either TinFoil (editor and TLWiki admin) or Nagato (hacker, not sure if he was an admin at the time), with the knowledge of the staff of most active Nitro+ projects at the time. I was just some random dude that never contributed much (I fixed some minor stuff in Chaos;Head which was how I got involved) but I was a TLWiki admin at the time.

I'll have to disappoint you here. The channel is named after a very old Touka Gettan project that was already completely dead back in 2009.

Remember how back at Anime Expo 2009, JAST announced they had acquired licenses for Nitro+ games? Well, shortly after that, someone (not sure who it was anymore...perhaps it was LoSs? Or Nagato?) received an e-mail from Peter Payne about cooperating to use the fan translations of Nitro+ games on TLWiki for the official releases. Everybody who had anything to do with the Nitro+ projects on TLWiki was gathered together and we took over #Touka, the then-dead channel that used to belong to the dead Touka Gettan project. A password was put on it, and it basically became the channel for TLWiki's part of the JAST/TLWiki cooperation. (It was from this channel that the whole 'SUPPORT JAST USA'S OFFICIAL LOCALIZATIONS OF NITRO+ GAMES' thing was coordinated.)

The last couple years it's been pretty much dead, though. We have some random discussions every now and then but nothing VN translation-related.

Side note for program: Due to laziness on my part, you'll get weird bugs if the path where you put HigurashiFixer contains 'input' (as it autoreplaces 'input' with 'output' to get the output folder to save to).

It should translate common route, Kana route and Ureshino route (the latter probably unedited). Images beyond the demo content remain untranslated as there were none (that aren't in the demo) in the archive posted.

Problem is probably that my connection sucks donkey balls nowadays (in ideal conditions I only get half of the advertised upload speed, in practice it's far less, and the connection as a whole is very unreliable) and competitors aren't offering any better alternatives where I live right now (plus I'm stuck with the contract for a couple months more).

I can almost always connect to it myself from anywhere (which in practice always tends to be relatively close by), but it appears most /jp/ posters can't get a proper connection to it at all. I suspect my ISP and/or my ISP-provided modem messes with the traffic (also happens when I download a lot of data or similar, suddenly my speed slows to a crawl, reconnecting on another port of the modem fixes it).

The problem is near-impossible for me to recreate so I haven't had much luck in solving it, if it's even solvable beyond switching ISPs (which I definitely will do when my contract expires).

Like I said in the Steam thread, I usually don't care much about graphics, so I've never been bothered by fullscreen upscaling problems beyond pillarboxing making the mouse not work right. But in this game, it's very obvious. Maybe it's clearer in this screenshot. Just look at the eyes and mouth of the girl to the left. It's obviously not supposed to look like that.

As for the text, you look at it so often that it inevitably stands out at some point. I read Kira Kira and Higurashi 2-4 without the font patches (for Higurashi 1 I read the original fan translation) and had no problems with it, but this stuff really makes it harder to read.

Not visible are the slowness of the engine (I can't even scroll the backlog smoothly) and random graphical glitches (usually some blue-ish rectangle popping up for a single frame every couple minutes). It just breaks immersion, while you expect increased immersion from fullscreen.

This shouldn't even warrant a response, but...I've spoken to countless developers, both on- and offline, who have put their games on Steam and got their 70% cut (or their cut of the 70% cut in case there's a publisher in-between). This includes both developers known well enough to cause an outcry and completely unknown developers, as well as developers who used to be unknown and are now relatively well known. All of them have continued publishing games on Steam after their first Steam game, without any issues.

Communication to and from Valve can be quite a bit of a hassle at times especially for unknown people and groups (and I can speak from personal experience in this matter), but other than that they are entirely reliable. In the very unlikely case you really are a developer who never got their money from Valve, it is a case of miscommunication and/or incompetence (more common than you'd expect), not malice, from Valve's side and it will be resolved when you let them know.

I am currently moving to a new home (I'll have to leave the student dorm due to not being a student anymore), and as a result my uplink will drop from 100 mbps to 20 mbps (fastest I could get). This basically means the FTP's speed will be reduced by theoretically 80% (probably less, but still a sharp decrease). I'll leave the server in my old home until I lose access to it (September 19th); if you still want to download something on the FTP at a decent speed, I recommend doing it before then.

I think that's gonna be difficult as uploading is disabled, as it has been ever since I first started the FTP. Also, as a general rule, there's no straight-up porn on the FTP (18+ content is fine, it just needs to be more than simple fap material). As this was done mainly because you can find porn anywhere and I didn't want to waste my bandwidth on people using the FTP just for the porn (it'd definitely spread outside /jp/ and quickly become 90% people only there for the porn) and this seems to be porn you can't just find everywhere (as well as very much /jp/ material), I would be willing to make an exception for this, but as I've also given the FTP info to some people who know me in real life I'm not willing to host "creepy fetish porn" on the main FTP - if you really can't find any other place to host it, I guess I could create a different FTP user for that file (and/or other relevant files, but only stuff you can't host or find elsewhere - I'm not interested in running a complete porn FTP).

While I'm on the topic of the FTP, and I should probably also mention this in the VNTS or VN General at some point, in roughly a month the server's uplink will be reduced to 20% of what it currently is as I will be moving and thus losing my godly connection; 20 Mbps up is the best I can get at my new home even taking the most expensive plan. In other words, FTP downloads will probably become five times as slow at some point halfway through September.

The FTP is back up, this time with 100% less access to my root folder. The IP has changed, though; it may take some time for the domain name to update, and even after that your cache will inevitably make your computer refuse to connect. You can use the direct IP (145.120.14.173) to connect immediately and resume trying to hax my anus. If something like this happens again, just make a post in any thread on /jp/ containing 'VDZ' or 'FTP' and I'll find it a long time after it's posted.

Looks like I got very, very lucky. A lot of stuff was actually accessible, including stuff that definitely shouldn't be leaked on a non-personal level (though that specific stuff could only be found if you knew where to look, it was hidden). Fortunately, the only thing of interest leaked was a bunch of personal photos.

Time to check into how this could've happened - years ago I *tried* to make it happen for my personal access, but the software was so stubborn about security that I couldn't make it go beyond my home folder. Weird how suddenly that was possible for every account.
