While I severely, severely, SEVERELY doubt Jessica is Beatrice, I can't quite say for she had a happy life. The few bits and pieces we get about her background aren't too comforting.

The thing that jars me is that of course no one has a problem with "magic' like slight of hand and such. What people DO have a problem with is the "magic" that Shkanontrice uses to brutally kill people.

The way Ryukushi writes, you almost think that he thinks people are foaming at the mouth in rage at Beatrice using slight of hand to cheer up Maria. We're not, we ARE however raging at Beatrice blasting off people's heads with shotguns and then being all holier than thou to Battler.

I just can't think that Battler would switch to defend Beatrice if she were the killer but fear not! Her motives were love! She killed innocent people in cruel, violent ways that were over the top, love or not, that's just evil.

Here's the rub though. It's not that Kanon is the nearest boy around. Episode 6 addressed this. Jessica is not unattractive, and as one can see from episode 2, many people are into her. Episode 6 says that there were plenty of boyfriends she could have at her school, and yet she was into Kanon. She didn't know why she liked Kanon, but she wanted to. So, she liked Kanon, she sensed that Kanon liked her, why not start a relationship?
She's really not as shallow as you are making her out to be.
