Viz didn't butcher them, it cut their face and skin off and made into a dress, then tucked between its legs and danced to Pokemon theme tune, with its furry OC characters super imposed next to them. Well, it wasn't that bad, but they basically made it to please the Soccer Mom's. To be honest I would just read the originals online, but I collected the Viz translations for the sake of collecting them, starting from when I was 13, so I didn't really know any better. The Ruby and Sapphire chapters haven't been released by Viz yet, but they are going to be.

In my opinion the whole thing is retarded, there is a much, much better solution, and allows Nintendo to keep kids in the anime. What they should have done is change the protagonist every region, but still have the older characters come back every now again. And they should have killed Team Rocket after the Orange League. There's virtually no reason for them to exist anymore, and BW proved changing them into more serious and capable characters didn't make the story and worse, it made better, so I have no idea why they made them shit again.

Cirno is an oddity. But I'm pretty sure its of non-Japnese origin, in Japanese its "ちるの" which is "chi-ru-no". But then, the fact that its it is usually written in Hiragana makes me think its a Japanese name. I'm not too sure on Cirno, since I don't know where the name comes from. The main problem is that is easy to turn Japanese into English, because we can pronounce all their words, but because Kana is syllabic, they can't have things like "Alice", it has to be converted into Japanese. Names like "Reimu" we can pronounce, we can pronounce, so they don't have to be changed, but it does work the opposite way. Names like "Letty Whiterock" would cause a Japanese no end of trouble to pronouce, so it has be changed for them. Heck, even Hong Meiling had to be changed. It don't how it works exactly, and I'm not an expert linguist, so please no-one bite my head off about it. Also, this is for the majority of characters, there are exceptions, like Hong Meiring and Cirno, and there was even a debate about Meiling's name on 2ch, so they they just called her China. Again, notice how for the Chinese and English language, her name is kept as Hong Meiling, but in Japanese, it had be changed.

Sorry if I went off on myself a bit, I tried to explain it the best I can, and its an interesting subject.

Its usually the other way round, they start with a foreing name, like Alice, and then it's converted into Japanese. The ones that have Japanese names just keep them in the English patches. That's what I think anyway, you'll have to ask Zun.
