Learning the language can be tied with learning for the benefit of playing VNs, games, etc that are in Japanese. Learning the culture behind the origin of most of the otaku related media is also chained in. As long as it's linked to the aspect of the otaku culture, it remains on topic.

It was terrible yesterday morning with that epic META-thread and all the bickering over ZUN possibly becoming a janitor, coupled with the "is that cirno?" bullshit and the spamming of Saten-chan. Yesterday was a hell hole, today has been surprisingly slightly more on topic; actually found a few threads related to Japanese language/culture that I could post in seriously and offer valid content.
