Never been myself so I can't comment on the people, but it's a popular destination within Japan for Japanese. I know quite a few people who were excited about their trips to Hokkaido past/future...

As for the weather it's a good few degrees cooler than mainland Japan. I should imagine that it's somewhat more bearable.
It gets colder in the winter, though! Days on end of snow that actually sticks!

Be prepared to melt; it's pretty hot, humid and sticky out here...

That I will agree with. I don't find it hard to navigate at all, but this is my fourth time here and this time I'm here for the next 13 months. I expect by the end of it I'll be navigating like a Japanese and *gasp* maybe even sleeping!
I did manage to fall asleep today on the train, but I was getting off on the last stop so it wasn't exactly like I was doing it for real (ie sleeping and waking up at my stop)

PS I just took this photo. I'm in a friend's apartment right now while I look for my own. I don't have a bank account yet so the apartment I want may not be possible for me. Pity, really...

GPS location is

N 35 33.479
E 139 42.917
398m above sea level

Someone come visit me tomorrow night!!

Oh no, it isn't but even today I tried using the Odakyu line with a JR pass only to have the gates slam back at me... I did consider using a gaijin blast and just powering on through but I decided it would be better to go and pay... It was only Machida to Sagami-ono so 120 I didn't think was so bad...
I guess it didn't help that I was half asleep also

There are always pictures of the transport system because you spend a sizable proportion of your time on a train (literally, it's too convenient NOT to use...)
Since it's such a mythical beast to get anywhere also, it's somewhat a celebratable situation when you finally reach your destination...
Then you have to remember on which lines you can use your JR rail pass etc etc etc...

I'm looking around Fuchinobe, and particularly in Kamio-yamada-machi. It's pretty desolate... The place I fell in love with is nearly at the top of a hill in the middle of nowhere near a graveyead. The view is fantastic.
I'm after somewhere big (2dk or 1LDK of at least 45m2) but I'm expecting gaijin-houses etc are going to be out of my reach in that situation..?
I suppose there's always a manga-kissa if I get into real trouble......

Thank you for the fist helpful response.
My next resort if this falls through was to go private. I've got until August 4th to find an apartment at which time I return to England for a few weeks before coming out here for the year. The apartment with the stoner owner sounds great, though!
How did you go about arranging "private" agreements? Newspapers and the like, or something?

In by /b/-style posts I meant that the posts were all in different directions, not the same opinions from everyone. If I was happy with the 2chan responses then I wouldn't have come here to ask people, now, would I?
I didn't actually post, by the way, I searched archives etc etc...

Greetings, everyone
This may be the first time that I have posted a genuine serious question on this board.
I wonder, does anyone know about the company Housecom? If anyone has rented with them before could they tell me the experience, and how "above board" it seems.
I'm half way through organising a rental contract with them and I'm starting to think that things are slightly awry.
I've also taken a look at 2chan and nothing other than /b/-like posts are really about, with one person saying one thing, one person saying the complete opposite...
Any help would be appreciated...

In before weaboo and moonspeak...

tl;dr: Renting with www.housecom.jp -- Any thoughts?

I used to get shit for programming when I was in secondary school, but there`s still a distinct difference: Programmers are entering a world of programming, Japanese-learneres are entering a world of a closed society...

Haha that is somewhat true, although I hold no interest in the majority of the "[anime-name] is this/that/the-other" threads...
I realise this is still a very young board, but the general consensus here seems still just as /a/ as the rest of 4chan...

"As soon as you say to people that you are studying Japanese, people think you are one of THESE idiots", my housemate just exclaimed. [In response to seeing the majority of the thrads on this page... In return I give a picture by a Korean child (one of many) of Korea killing Japan]

Discuss.

Define "without suppressing my power levels"? You mean 4chan power levels or Japanese power levels?
