I was here during the split. The points you make about that there's a limited amount of original content related to Japan topics, can be said about Touhou/VN too.

I see the same topics and questions posted here every single day. And moot made this board for Japan AND Japan-related games. /a/ wasn't only flooded by touhou back then, but also language threads and travel threads.
