Sometimes I just think Muv Luv is one of those things where a lot of people just completely miss its point.

People who think Ex/Ul is shit and Alt is THEBESTTHEBESTTHEBEST and think the whole story is about humanity using giant fucking robots to fight rape aliens... nah, it's about a harem lead being tossed into a fuckawful reality and watching him struggle to get back to his own world / make a difference in his newfound environment / grow the fuck up / etc.

The rape aliens, giant robots, and other assorted sci fi stuff that's captivated people are all just a means to tell a story. You could dump Takeru into the middle of WWII and probably achieve a similar outcome, more or less.

You know, the only real complaint I'd ever level at Muv Luv is that I'm starting to think it's just like every example of Japanese sci fi I've ever encountered.

Sometimes I wonder if it's actually pretty generic in the grand scheme of things.

Setting's interesting, and the mecha designs are cool, but it's like "shit, why does this feel so familiar?"

R-Type was really the one thing I knew them for, and it's a shame there's really nothing being done for the series.

It kinda just fizzled out after Tactics 2, and that never made it out of Japan.

I think they should revisit what they did for Final, and do some sort of fuckhuge game with massive replay potential.

Preferably with less slowdown this time around.

Yeah, it's pretty fun.
Arcade version has a linear mission structure, SNES has you hopping around battlefields.

It also has the distinction of bringing up the whole Project 4 story stuff from the manga that got stripped away in both the OVA and anime adaptations (from what I understand they're a group trying to profit off of the Aslan civil war by prolonging things and selling weapons or something along those lines)...
