My intention was originally to show that you can be both accomplished at... what was it... reading kanji and also make posts that make you blatantly question the poster's intellectual integrity in order to dissuade people from having iq and charisma arguments tied to japanese learning ability, as well as to motivate them into getting good because if a chump like "makopi" could do it then so ought to be able to do anyone, but I think the idea itself got old in the process, especially as the person known as ciaran has been extraordinarily successful at making, I think intentionally, truly unimpressive posts to accompany his kanji reading accomplishments. So I'm pretty much left with these aimless posts of mine, although I did write an earnest one for 瞑想ガール. I have been pronouncing it with the vowel of "man". Saying "monga" predictably makes you sound like you're saying "monga". Inserting a word entirely in a foreign pronunciation scheme is awkward. Doing a half-foreign, "half-wrong" pronunciation is in fact the same as doing it fully wrong and in addition makes you sound like you are both inept at that language and not aware of it as you are as if showing off your ineptitude. It seemed to me that only a fully native pronunciation agreeing with the spelling would carry grace. I also start informally alternating it with "comic" if I have to be saying "manga" multiple times.

I think there's some amount of inbuilt, I would say opacity in the japanese language that is greater than that which is present in English. Example would be the numerous set expressions for which you have to basically know their background separately--and it is considered a good thing. Perhaps not as directly related, but a good part of Japanese poetry is by design not even intelligible on its own, not to anyone, unless you know the occasion on which it was composed and in response to whom, and which previous poetry it references--in which case you can finally decode through, like, 3 layers of symbolism present on every key word. JAPANESE people study (memorize) words and phrases used in 和歌 in order to interpret the sophisticated intent of the poet. I don't think this has a widespread parallel in English poetry. I know Victorian English used to value a kind of opacity in style, but that has passed--but modern Japanese still, to a good extent, does. But most obviously, you have kanji, which Japanese people themselves have to study by rote... I recall the advice given to elementary and middle schoolers on memorizing 四字熟語 is to try and understand why the individual kanji are in there; and imagine doing the alternative against which the advice must have been issued in the first place. But this is a consequence of the circumstance that all Japanese people must learn the language equally despite possessing the full range of variation in aptitude.

Thus... the nonchalance must itself be controlled, lest you be sucked into turning everything into a chore. These parts, that which is overwhelmingly natural and that which is supported by mental structure and building, must be recognized and separated, and you are justified in incorporating the elements normally vetoed for language "Acquisition" for those mini-game type of things like being able to read more kanji. I mean, look at how Japanese people apply their experience of consciously getting better at their own native language Japanese, towards foreign language learning such as English--it is a disaster.

The best advice is unfortunately profoundly unexciting. At least, it sounds that way... even though doing it itself is exciting. I've been reading a trash ranobe series in the last couple of days and it's just so genuinely fun to interact with the language of the author. i'd want to kill myself i had to worry about fucking word frequencies compiled by pseudo nerds who dont know the language or some shit.

I'd love to write a guide because I would like to help people, but it would most likely be several paragraphs of pseudo-self-help pseudo-philosophical advice written in incomprehensible esl english on the philosophy of just reading text, followed by something ridiculous like "how to read text with your eyes" where I expound in unnecessary detail on how I process the sentence 私はゲイです; and idol videos.
