The Virgin Suicides

Doesn't have much of a point, but the prose is voluptuous and it's pretty much exactly what you're looking for.

Can someone please explain this bullshit?

too many one-liners for my liking.

I still have a copy on my shelf with the bookmark squarely in the middle. I just can't bring myself to finish it.

Reading this for a class.

I'm having trouble grappling with the lack of motivation for many of the characters, but I can't resist marveling at how vivid Marquez's prose is while managing to stay so tightly wound.

Nearing the end. Thoughts?

Yeah, but....that's just taking it at face value. There's a few offhand references to some 80s indie acts, but it doesn't drive the plot. If anything, the end would indicate a rejection of that attitude/scene.

>> No.1183163 [View]

the end of that book was bizarre even by his standards

I dunno if I'll ever read anymore Vonnegut. I think most of his work can be summarized as "Humanity sucks." Gets kinda tired after awhile.

I'll never understand why it's so polarizing. It's just an above average romantic comedy with a relevant message.

Look, I'm going to try to make this clear...

Rights don't actually exist. They're an allusion. We create them so we can make a better world for ourselves. The justification is immaterial.

So, yeah, he's basically a fucking idiot who's just stating the obvious.

I haven't read any Chesterton, but it's plain to see he's missing the glaring fact that the foundations of enlightenment era liberalism were outlined by John Locke, an atheist.

The Declaration isn't a legal document either. It's not even one of the instruments that shapes American legal democracy. The Constitution does, and God isn't mentioned even once in there.

Hey, /lit/, I'm in class talking about magical realism vs. folklore.

Where do you exactly draw the line? Are they the same?

>> No.1169913 [View]

lol, no

i like /lit/ albeit begrudgingly so, but, no, just, no.

No way Saruman could have become a warlord. All of his forces were annihilated at the end of The Two Towers and he was stripped of his power by the Valor.

In any case, the Witch King would have been killed/made immaterial after the ring fell into the fires of Mt. Doom, regardless of whether or not he had been killed by Eowyn at Pellnor Fields.

It makes it impossible to follow any of the action. The words seem like they're running all over the place.

It's a struggle just to focus on the page.

No. Not at all.

Just read this for a class. An acquired taste (definitely could have used better sequencing), but I enjoyed it in the end. I really liked how obsessed he was with the idea of time as a labyrinth and ultimate understanding being a fruitless human endeavor.

What does /lit/ think? Any other thoughts on Borges? Recommendations?

>> No.1168687 [View]

Just took a look at the Amazon page. You might want to proof it a bit more.

A fiction novel? Based on 4chan? Really? I dunno. Just thinking about reading it makes me twitch with embarrassment. I'd have honestly been more interested in a non-fiction study of the site, it's culture and the impact it has on society.
