>in older work he's consistently an old fart.

In the very first book (The Colour of Magic) he's portrayed as being in his early 30's/late 20's. At least that's within the book. I never looked closely at any of the cover art.

But here's a pic of him from the book "Art of Discworld".

I tried watching it. It's on Netflix.

I had to shut it off after like 10 minutes because for some reason they cast a crusty old 70 year old dude to play Rincewind when he's supposed to be an aloof and young wizard.

Took me right out of it and I couldn't take it seriously.

Discworld Thread?

Discworld thread.

In your opinion, what is the best Discworld book?

>What makes a book sad?

When the character(s) in the book are fleshed-out enough that when they feel grief and sorrow you genuinely feel sorry for them and understand why they feel as they do.

I don't like it for the mere reason that once I finish a book, I add that book to my bookshelf; a figurative trophy case of the knowledge and experiences I've gained.

It's much more satisfying to look at a case physically displaying what I've read than a virtual folder full of .pdf and .mobi files. The only book I've even read on a kindle was "Post Office" by Charles Bukowski and I ended up going out and buying a copy AFTER I read it just so I could put it on my shelf with all my other books.

Just a personal preference, though. As far as actually reading, a kindle/nook can be much easier on the eyes and you don't need to worry about getting the pages dirty.

>I read like 40 pages of the original and the use of nonsensical made up words and terms was too much for me.

This seems to be an extremely common complaint; but you really need to keep reading. The book makes you think that there are going to be tons of terms and names that you need to remember right off the bat, but the important ones come up so frequently throughout the series that it's impossible to not know what they mean when the time arises for them to be central to the plot.

I've lent the book to 4 friends and they all came to the exact same consensus with the original Dune: It starts off very hard to get into and almost mind-numbingly dull, and by the time they are two-thirds of the way through it, it's one of the greatest books they've ever read.

Personally I enjoyed Messiah more. But obviously you should read Dune first in order to understand it.

But when you say "the whole series", you're including the Expanded Dune universe? Not just the original 6 books by Frank?

Are ANY of the books in the Dune series written by Frank Herbert's son worth reading?

ANY of them? If so, which one(s)?

I just bought this for $2.00

Never read it or anything by Frank Herbert.

Did I get ripped off or am I in for an adventure?

I kinda wanna just not read it and read the rest of the Discworld series because I just finished the first 2 Rincewind books and am hungry for more fantasy but at the same time I want some sci-fi.

What's /lit/ think?

More like first-person narratives about debauchery, negligance, and wholesome "I just don't give a fuck"-ness, but I suppose those are alright as well.
