A.M. Pinecone used to write a catalog for /lit/. In one of his articles, he does a Q&A where he basically says that Holden rapes his sister Phoebe in The Catcher and the Rye, citing his Freudian slips and tendencies as an unreliable narrator. I'll see if I can find you the article; I knew I had it around somewhere.

I have one too. I keep my thoughts in a leather Sprint™ journal that I got for free at work one day.

At one point I got so depressed that I began putting my thoughts and feelings in there for the sake of being sane. Now I update it on a regular basis, and it has most of my remembered history in it.

It's funny what depression can drive a man to do.

I just put words on the page; anything that at least gets me off my ass and writing. Once I have that, everything else just tends to follow naturally, like a stream of knowledge, following the path of least resistance.

Give yourself some more time than that. Seriously, you need to finish off a big fucking novel before calling it quits.
Also, don't forget to write your life story before you die, that way it won't be a total loss.

Sorry if I was too pretentious for you.
Although it's difficult not to when talking about yourself.
It's a bad character flaw of mine.

When that idiot posted NSFW on a blue board.

I led the anons into anarchy as we collectively realized the thread was doomed.

We managed to get through all the /lit/ memes, and we even had a guy posting the final arguments of Socrates.

Unlimited "drink the hemlock" puns.

We read through the Communist Manifesto together, and made tons of Stirner references.

Baneposting ensues, the fire rises.

Good times.

I personally just read for enjoyment. It feels like the only way I can tolerate it these days.

To stay sane
To record my insanity
To impress others
To complete an important document
To not get fired
My life is a story I'd rather not have repeated.

I wright because I care.
I do not enjoy it one bit.
It's a painful ordeal,
but I enjoy it anyways.
I take pride in the result,
and I relish the suffering.

Between writing and running, I have no other explanation for my inflictions other than I care more about results than I do the process.

Fuck my life.

Honestly, it's a hard question.

Well, Greek literature is basically the foundation of Western philosophy. It's called the "Western Canon" for a reason. Almost every other Western philosopher makes references to the works of ancient Greeks.

There you will learn important things about poetry, how to conduct an argument, and using logic in all its forms. In short, it will train you to become more astute and knowledgeable in the philosophical and literary tastes of the board.

"Start with the Greeks" is a meme here for a reason.

I personally recommend starting with the Iliad, because of it's more poetic and dramatic essence compared to other works. This is to take care of the stereotypical "dryness" that may make up your past experience with Ancient Greece.

I also prescribe you thinkers like Aristotle and Plato.

Aristotle had such a huge effect on Western thought that he can be attributed to modern empiricism, as well as the founding of logic and the division of the sciences.

As for Plato, transcendental philosophy and monotheistic religion in general can trace back to, or echo, his ideas and values.

So, there you have it, I hope you've found this recommendation somewhat helpful in your quest for greater understanding of Western literature.

Enjoy your stay here on /lit/!
