It's a fairly straightforward story about a dwarf in a renaissance italian city state. The dwarf represents man's evil nature. Mostly just observances about different characters who also represent different parts of human nature. You have the Machiavellian prince, the philosopher Da Vinci stand-in, etc.

Not ground-breaking stuff by any means, but makes for easy reading. If I had to come up with a buzzword description it would be "comfy misanthropy".

That would be funny except this is the attitude of almost every person engaged in a creative practice that is given the alibi of art these days.

People who are 'creatives' do want to describe art. They do not want to talk about art. They want to 'make' art, everything else (I.e. the other 3/4 of their activity) is seen as a boring constraint.

You cannot have an intellectual conversation with an artist.

You cannot discuss ideas with artists.

All artists can do is talk about art they like, basically in the same way comic book nerds talk about whether Superman or the hulk is stronger, except with the veil of cultural respectability.

Artists want to make pretty things and have people talk about them and pay them so that they don't have to work. In some respects they are like children who refuse to grow up in a particular way, and when they are forced to explain or justify their infantile behaviour it is a matter of tedious post-hoc rationalisation for them.

With writers you can still have an edifying discussion, because most writers are forced to engage with ideas and culture, forced to have experiences to write about. With artists it is a complete and utter waste of time. They are narcissistic hucksters who will immediately bristle when you try to get them into a discussion that requires a coherent and thought-out position.
