Nah, auto-antonymy isn't anything new. In many speech communities, "bad" is a less controversial example.
"Literally" just gets more flack because it takes a very common semantic change one step further. Words like "very", "really", etc. all made the transition from AssertionOfTruthValue -> EmphaticModifier. "Literally" then took that emphatic value and used it as a vehicle for hyperbole.

Yeah, but the existence of "try + INF" as a construction doesn't make "try and V" ungrammatical, even if they're used in analogy with each other.
"try" is a divalent, ambitransitive verb. It takes a subject, and then the speaker has the option of using a verbal complement or a direct object--the second argument isn't compulsory, though.
