DeLillo sucks and is in no way miles above of either of them. White Noise fucking sucks. Blood Meridian is better than DeLillo's entire career.

Your opinion is wrong. Vonnegut is barely even worth mentioning when talking about American lit.

Yep, he has made quite an idiot out of himself.

The civil war was about states rights and tariffs. I don't think slavery was the biggest reason for the civil war, the vast majority of people didn't own slaves. Seeing as Lincoln offered to add an amendment to the constitution protecting slavery as an attempt to appease the south I doubt it was.

>always tried to downplay their history

That's why you never see a confederate battle flag in the south... oh wait..

Yeah, because Philip K. Dick and Vonnegut are where it's at and writers like Herman Melville, William Faulkner, Henry James, Walt Whitman, Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Harte Crane, Williams Carlos Williams, Eugene O' Neil, Eliot, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Warren, Lewis, Pynchon, West, Bellow, Wharton, Longfellow, Frost, Miller, ect, ect all shit.

Hey, maybe you should grow up and read more than six authors before making any judgments.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
What profit hath a man of all his labor which he taketh under the sun?
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full: unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Is this the best you could do lit? Seriously? Am I being fucking trolled here? Oh sweet, nothing by Henry James but I get two Don Delillo. That's just great guys. Two Don Delillo, that's twice as many as Mark Twain by the way. That's 1 for Bret Ellis and 0 for Henry James. Good work guys.

Hey how about some of these titles:

The Awakening by Kate Chopin
The American/Portrait of a Lady/Wings of the Dove by Henry James
A Connecticut Yankee in King Authors Court by Mark Twain
The Octopus by Frank Norris
An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
Three Lives by Gertrude Stein
Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis
The Day of the Locust by Nathaniel West
All The Kings Men by Robert Warren
Herzog by Saul Bellow
Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara
The Recognitions by William Gladis
Wise Blood by Flannery O' Connor
The Moviegoer by Walker Percy
The Sot-Weed Factor by John Barth

Maybe even Infinite Jest, you guys seem to love that shit.

Also, The Maltese Falcon? The Godfather? Maybe if this was /tv/.
