Can someone explain Faust, Part 2 to me? The first part is understandable, there is structure, clear plot, however in part 2 Faust becomes some sort of time traveller. There is a homuncullus, hellen instead of gretchen, some carnival where 20 people each say one line, lemurs. WTF is the meaning of this work?

I was about to buy a translation by George Madison Priest, but it turns out there are more recent translations. Additionally, I can't find anything on Priest's translation. Please give me a quick rundown? Should I avoid Priest's translation?
