I was in a pretty impoverished place, in all senses of the word, but I remember wanting to learn another language or two, to drive, to escape to Alaska to gut fish for a while. To escape. To find friends and love outside the family.
I think everyone eventually finds something in their life to regret, no matter what they do with their time. But there’s nothing worse than sitting around doing nothing. And I say this as an Epicurean. You can live an active, adventurous life, and ward off anxiety, finding that lucid, robust tranquility, at the same time.
