Will a person who has read many philosophical and non-philosophical works be given an edge against a person who has only read non-philosophical works when writing non-philosophical works?

I read an amusing poem the other day here. The guy called it a black man song and it went something like:

We steal cars. We
deal drugs. We
drop niggaz. We
etc.
etc.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

This isn't lit, but it's probably the closest thing.

I'm choosing courses for the Fall and I want to learn an additional trade language (Or at the least, attempt to).

I'm going into computer science (At U of T if anyone cares) and have a basic background in French, but I can't stand the people.

I think the best options are:

German
Japanese
Modern Standard Chinese

Or, if it's not worth it, I wouldn't mind learning Polish or Latin.

Whoa, what's with lit in the past days? I've seen reccomendations threads with horrible, mainstream books as this one and I haven't seen a single explicit bash. Only rational, nice recommendations.

You've changed lit. I don't know how to feel about that. It makes me happy. But sad.

If it has multiple characters then I prefer third person. It the story that it's being told revolves solely on the main character, then I prefer first person. But I've seen firsts person deal with multiple characters that kinda know how to pull it off, and the other way around with third person.
