My question was what is known as a rhetorical question. It is the same as saying: nevermind the social urge, the impulsive emanation that only seems to happen in a chat, to ask a question you can't verify/understand if answered. You can't ask if you can't verify the answer, or you are kind of crazy. Simple as that.

Has art or literature ever raised you from the darkest depths of despair? From soul-crushing depression?

Why aren't there more Buddhists?
>unparalleled in its acceptance of other faiths or lack thereof

>no rules, only guidelines which members are encouraged to follow

>does not encourage unscientific thinking, and urges its followers to test their principles themselves

Am I pleb for not knowing my ancient Hindu terminology? I feel like I should be able to gather context clues from the rest of the text but should I look things up while I read?

How do you distinguish intelligence from those who are truly intelligent to those who finish their first and second years in university?

Also, what book did you last read

This. I had to force myself through it, as short as it is, because my best friend strongly recommended it to me and went as far as to lend me it.

I found it absolutely loathsome, colonial tripe. a conceptually empty parody of eastern culture that was as vacuous as all of the new-age bullshit it inspired. Pretty much in turns either insulting or dull, pure fetishisation for the sake of it.

It's the least I've ever enjoyed a book. The last part with the river was pretty good at least, one or two great passages, but not enough to redeem the rest of the book. All I can say is it just must have aged terribly. When it was released it must have been fascinating, but culturally we are so far past this crap. I honestly believe there is more to be learnt about eastern spiritualism from Kung Fu Panda than this pile of shit.

Sup /lit/, I just finished Siddhartha and enjoyed it. I used to read a lot more when I was younger, but Siddhartha is the first book I've finished in a while. I now want to read more "classic" (and difficult) books like The Brothers Karamazov, Gravity's Rainbow, The Sot Weed Factor, The Trial, etc. but I don't think I would be able to jump into those kind of behemoths after having not read for so long. I wanted to read Naked Lunch but my local library doesn't have it, so I'm looking for recommendations of books that are slightly shorter and more readable than the "classics" but still challenging and interesting enough to inspire me to work up to reading the longer, more difficult ones. It's kind of a specific request, I know, but I appreciate any replies. Thanks.

Hey, I'm looking I've only read a few basics so far and I'm looking for some books on philosophy and outlooks on life, just anything that can change the way you think. I got recommended pic related and I'm thinking of ordering it, anyone read it or have any other suggestions?

I'm also a little interested in some fantasy novels to get me started too if you have any must reads

This is just so beautiful. I hope Narziß und Goldmund (which I'll probably start in two weeks) is similar to Siddhartha because I really didn't like Steppenwolf.

Has reading this changed you in any way? What did you feel when reading this novel?

I felt a sort of contentment at the end. I can't say for sure that it's philosophically changed me, but I did make me reflect on my past experiences (mistakes, joys, regrets, etc). I'm also more interested in the philosophy of Buddhism now.
