Besides Tolkien’s works there’s hardly any good fantasy books that exist. The genre is really bad to the point where authors like Sanderson who are so boring and stale can be heavy hitters in the genre. And someone like grrm can be considered a legend. Tolkien was a great author. But fantasy as a genre is largely very bad. The black company is one of the only good fantasy works I can think of besides Tolkien

I don't know why I put this one off for so long. It's surprisingly good.

I've reached the middle of book 5 and I'm confused about something. Why did the lady attempt to kill the various Taken with violence when she knew their true names? She uses violence to "kill" Soulcatcher and is surprised when she shows up later on and causes her all kinds of problems now that she herself has been stripped of her powers. Soulcatcher is her sister so why didn't she just name her, strip her of her power, and kill her E Z back in book 3 or whatever it was? Same thing happened later with Shifter and the other one when they were fighting each other in the Shadowmaster's fortress (they knock them out, put them in a bag, and throw them in a hole).

Does this get clarified later on? No spoilers past midway into book 5 please.

So after a friend of mine has spent months shilling it, I finally read pic related.

Is the plot improving in the sequels, or does it stay that bad?

What's with Croaker dream? suddenly fantasizing about Darling aged girls. I don't get why Croaker suddenly despises the Lady either.

>/lit/ considers this essential reading

I tried to read this twice already, and I couldn't get more than a couple chapters. The problem for me is that it's narrated by a guy who's supposed to be a doctor, but he sounds nothing like a doctor. On top of that, the characters are given no description whatsoever. You don't even find out that one guy is a balding old man until he dies.

Is it really worth giving it another try?

So I've been reading mature fantasy lately, specifically The Black Company (Glen Cook), The Curse of Chalion (Lois McMaster Bujold) and The Broken Empire (Mark Lawrence).
Trouble is, I'm fresh outta pages. Got any good reads up your sleeves?

So I've finished the books of the north.

Do the books of the south and the books of the glittering stone hold up in comparison or is it all down hill from here?

I liked the most that it followed the whole company in the first 3 books but after the ending of the third book of the north i fear that it's slowly going away from that

What I do like about his writing is that he wraps up every books story, leaving questions but never any real cliffhangers. Has anyone read the Black Company?

Felt like reading some fantasy and couldn't be arsed going back to Malazan. Just finished the first book in The Black Company series, quite enjoyed it. Thought it kind of jumped a bit when I expected it to go into something more but that may just be me not being used to how Kindle paragraphs things.
I wonder though how the fuck did they without a doubt figure Darling was the White Rose? First a dream Croaker figured was just a dream and then she was unaffected by some spell and seemingly woke people up, but is that all there was? And only Croaker knew of his dream, did the rest of the company just figure she must be the chosen one solely by that one event? Did I miss something?
