I've never seen this book discussed here. Has anyone read it, and if so, would you recommend it? I've seen some say that the Scots dialect makes it a slog at times, and I don't really want to invest time into such a book if it will become obtuse later on.

Is Irvine Welsh elite?

The heavy dialect written in was too much for me.

Any fans of Scottish fiction floating around? Being a Scot, I've shamefully never delved into our literary offerings. Recently read Trainspotting and How Late it Was, How late.

Trainspotting was excellent, but How Late was just too circular and boring.

Any thoughts /lit/? Or suggestions would be welcome.

what are some novels that have heavy references to modern music? for example, like in Trainspotting. plenty of 80's/90's music references (such as The Smiths, Joy Division and so on).

I got really into Irvine Welsh a few years ago. Read everything that I could get my hands on. Acid House, Glue, Maribou Stork Nightmares, Trainspotting (obviously), Filth and Glue. Then I read Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs and...it seemed like he had totally lost it. The novel was a really cheap attempt to re-write the Picture of Dorian Gray with touches from Jekyll and Hyde.

Now I'm reading a little bit about Skagboys, which is supposed to come out next year and I really can't help but be interested. I think I'm going to pick it up. What do you all think?

So /lit/, what are your opinions on Irvine Welsh?

Personally I think he's a genius.

I may be a minority here, but I think Irvine Welsh has never written anything worthwhile other than this, and maybe Acid House. I get it, he's from Leith, he's poor, working class and knows Junkies. It's basically Bret Easton Ellis minus the bourgeois and sunshine.

Anyone else feel that Trainspotting is a fantastic novel?

One of my favourite books by far.
