I am reading books from this list and not getting depressed or empathizing with the characters at all, it feels like I am doing something wrong. Im not talking about this from a I'm an edgy sociopath way either. I just don't get how we are empathizing with these characters that we know practically nothing about.

For example I just finished mouchette and didn't particularly care about what happened. I feel like it's because I know so little about the character and her life.. I have read more books on the list but to the same feeling of not caring. Are any of these book particularly good at character building so I don't just waste my time? Anyone else have a hard time finding depressing books depressing?
