Despite how many stupid people there are in the world who claim to be Muslim and do horrendous things, despite how many intelligent people there are that say that Islam is inherently just like all other religions, the Quran is really unlike anything you ever read. If you really want to get something out of it I suggest letting go of all your preconceived notions about anything and everything and starting from a place of respect and revert for the past and for a book that represents a way of like for millions of people around the world. Maybe even let go of that notion. Hm. When I think about the Quran what is most striking is how it talks to you. The language is very much aimed at (you), except it is supposed to be (god) Allāh who is talking to Mohammed. Try not to think of it like you are reading a document or a historical text or a poem, because it’s none of those things. It’s an experience, especially for westerners. Think of it written to you, because it is inherently made and written/told with that exactly in mind. Let it take you, I promise you will return but honestly it’s not like any book you’ve ever read. In entertainment they have what’s known as the 4th wall, the one the audience sees through, so an actor addressing the audience would be breaking the the 4th wall. “Post modern” novels have done this, addressing the reader. The Quran does this, it’s breaks the 4th wall, but it’s not Mohammed addressing you, it’s God
