Redwall was a particular favorite of mine and a comfy series to return to.

any one else grow up on these books? I was crazy about them as a kid. In retrospect, only the first two or three have any literary merit, but still the series was very cozy and, dare I say, based

The Redwall Series basically educated me as a child. I mean, I had school, yes, but I also had the Redwall books.

They taught me that life could be cruel and bloody. They taught me that all men must die. They taught me that food is fucking delicious and that it should be enjoyed. They taught me that old things should be respected. They taught me that both peace and war can be the right path, but that the trend should be towards peace.

I owe so much to the Redwall books.

Well, seeing as the author of my childhood favorite series died yesterday, I'm going to go on a huge Redwall spree.

I know much of /lit/ hates on fantasy, and probably even more so on children's books or young adult books, but I'd like to ask some questions about Redwall. I've always heard about Redwall growing up but never looked at them really since they were considered children's books. However I've been looking for something new and different to read, and that's becoming harder and harder to accomplish. So I'm thinking of reading Redwall.

Just curious what users here thought of it, even if it is aimed for younger audiences. I'm just looking for something nice and enjoyable, just a new experience. Also for those who've read them, I'm wondering what order is preferred? According to wikipedia the publication and chronological order are very different, but I'm thinking of just going with publication order unless chronological order is more suggested.

Redwall general I suppose.

I loved this book when I was a kid, but I didn't even know there were other books until like a week ago after I offhandedly googled it holy shit
Anyway, which are, in /lit/s opinion, the best of the series

Ah Redwall. I had fond memories of you before you degenerated into the trite formulaic trash you are now, but rereading you, I am reminded of the terrible taste I had when I was a child (how terrible: I liked David Eddings). I suppose you always were a superficial and shallow series populated with bland, one-dimensional characters, and that what I disliked in later books was always apparent, just not obvious to my prepubescent self. Even then though, you could be forgiven to some extent. Many fantasy novels could be said to be this, but at least I got the feeling that you were trying something different early on rather then just going through the motions.I also saw something else in you, aside from the speciesism, something that I am not so quick to forgive, squandered potential.

So /lit/, how would you fix Redwall so it is not the fail it is today? Me? I believe injecting ambiguity would go a long ways to help the series.
