/lit/, what is it about the Catcher in the Rye that makes it different from other YA fiction? Its usually treated in a different way than other YA fiction, mainly that its tolerated at all.

Also, im not asking for justifications for past and present acclaim for Catcher compared to other YA, such as "It was the first of its kind" and "People get to it before other YA works". Im asking for your own personal reasons.

I dont think hes implying that Seymour didnt shoot himself. I havent read it in a while, and it was my least favorite Glass story so I didnt pay particular attention to it, but I do remember him going over that Seymour was indeed dead. That was one of the main reasons hes alone up in a cabin right?

Fucking God do I love Salinger. All of this genius in-and-out without any references outside of his own work. Even if it doesnt lead anywhere profound, I just have so much fun being a detective

I was 16 and took AP European history because I wanted to see what it was like, and normal school courses bored the shit out of me.

Our teacher was the most passionate man I have ever met. He couldnt stopped talking about how interesting these people were, or how important they were. He also knew god damn everything and anything. By the way anons, did you know that Louis the 16th of France supposedly had a huge and sensitive dick, and made it nearly impossible for him and Marie Antoinette to have sex? Or that Peter the Great used to constantly get drunk and run through the night dressed up as a sailor with other sailors? So he inspired me. The first thing we were taught was the Renaissance, which I greatly enjoyed.

I also took acid and got my first girlfriend.

I think its a very good book regardless of your age (adolescence and above I mean).

I read it in highschool when I was 16 and liked it, then I re-read it last year when I was 21 and liked it. I can understand how if youre re-reading it the book can come off as too much, but I think thats because this book in particular is about an extravagant character. Not extravagant like Dostoyevsky's or Wilde's characters where they come off as absurd or theatrical, but extravagant in that we are in Holden's head and he has such a unique voice, and something that makes his voice unique is that he doesnt stop being Holden anywhere in the book. The voice is always consistent and in character no matter the situation, which can come off as brilliant to many on a first read, but annoying or preachy to some on a first or second read.

Its like hanging out with this very interesting person who is very loud about who they are, and then youre stuck with them for a week. Unless you really like them, youre going to want to take a break from them, and some people just cant handle it and are very local about not handling it.

A work that uses its characters strictly for symbols has a far higher standard to reach than a normal work. A work that is 800 pages long has a far higher standard to reach than a normal work. A work that attempts to persuade its reader of a specific philosophy, directly, has a far higher standard to reach than a normal work.

The Foundtainhead doesnt cut it.

Also, I dont think Rand was attempting to make symbols in place of characters. She was trying to sell her philosophy by showing something realistic. Even if that wasnt her intention, the work isnt able to cut it. The characters as symbols do nothing else than sell her philosophy, there is no other focus or reason for them.

Haha I know, but I am sincerely curious what you would think.

I mean if you can say that a film you like would lose some of its substance because the characters alone are younger, than it doesnt seem to be the artist's technique that determines if you like it or not, just the setting alone is a turn off.

So again, I know its my job to make the story compelling, but if you are my audience and you have this specific taste, im not sure there is much can do to make you like a story about teenagers.

Heres a better question, is there a story you have ever liked that is based on teenagers?

Holden doesnt imagine a man doing it, he imagines himself. Its crazy, I know it is.

He hints that men have touched him before but he tends to exaggerate so its hard to tell if hes telling the truth or not. What makes it even worse is that immediately after this he begins wondering if he overreacted, and as the reader we cant help but wonder also if hes just overreacting.

>>4002374
Mean spirited hipster? Not even.

>>4002645
He is most definitely wrestling with his sexuality and sexual urges, but again, tis just common teenage angst. Doesnt mean he had to be raped, then again its possible

A second point is that, unlike a automobile specialist dismissing automobiles in general, a scientist dismissing philosophy is dismissing the very tools he uses to make this dismissal.

/lit/ are any of you planning on taking philosophy at the graduate level?

Im an undergrad right now for philosophy and I have to say I dont see much in it besides the pay a professor gets IF you can land the job. Professors and graduate students have so much resting financially on their work in philosophy that they really let their ego taint their work. I also get more out of my own personal studies than I do in a class or speaking with a professor.

PS in hopes of nipping these comments in the bud, im getting this degree debt free and am currently during research and a grad course at a top uni so I probably have a shot for my Phd if get my MA at a decent uni

/lit/, Im asking this here because you guys probably have the most experience with this.

Im at Uni currently and this last quarter im doing horribly of mental instability and I want to check myself in to the University's therapist and later psychiatrist.

The problem is, my friend did something similar last year and was thrown out of the university by psychiatric services. If that happens to me ill be left with debt and no diploma. What do I do?

/lit/, im reading Portrait of the artist as a young man by Joyce, about two thirds through, and im not enjoying anymore.

I mean, near thirty pages describing hell? Three pages describing the swooning of beauty and art to Stephen the main character? Random ass language? Random cuts that dont really seem to add anything to the narrative except confusion?

I liked it in the beginning, but man once he had hell and brimstone scared into him it really went downhill.

What do you guys think? Why is this considered so amazing?

Like I said, im horrible at hearing and speaking French, and it takes time for me to write a composition. Theres no way for me to show I didnt just have a tutor or use something online. I mean how do I show them I spent a lot of time writing the composition when someone else could have written it in half the time?

I've been keeping a journal off and on for about 4 years. The first year or so was me getting over my only "love". After that its just been general wondering, poems, ideas for stories, and just writing down some things I thought I would like remembering later. Also the occasional self-loathing.
