You can't. The nation is a constantly changing beast, always at front of modernity and intelligence, always doing something new and exciting and entertaining. The world follows in her wake, and for her critics, the massive waves that drift away from the hull are more important that the boat which charges forward. Listen to me now: ignore the waves. Look to the engineers, the design, the crew, and the captains. Look to the builders and pilots and boatswains. But ignore the waves. They are ephemeral. Do you understand? It is okay if you don't. Few Americans do, and virtually no Europeans are capable of grasping this concept. But it is essential to the American identity and behavior, and thus it is essential to the direction of the planet.
