How do you choose which books to read?

I have more books I want to read than I've probably got time for in my entire life, and by the time I finished one I've probably already added five new ones to the list. Sometimes choice paralysis sets in and other times it just makes the whole endeavor feel futile, knowing that I'll never read everything worth reading. Not to mention that I don't know what's worth it until I've read it and enough books like it to create a fair comparison, so the whole selection process becomes pointlessly recursive.

I'm reading an anthology discourses from the Pali Canon and it seems to me like Buddhism is just a distilled Brahmanism with more emphasis on pragmatic ethics to attract lay followers for the free food for the monks. Am I wrong?
