Has he surpassed himself with Lincoln in the Bardo? He has always embodied DFW's vague "new sincerity" program better than DFW did. In his short stories I think he is sometimes too easy on himself but I think moving away from the comic-dystopian deal to the (for lack of a better term) magic realism of LitB opened up avenues for him aesthetically that complement his ideas (which remain the same everywhere).
