"I don't have a religion but I believe in God". Why such affirmation is so common? Personally I always see people saying it when asked about their beliefs. Realize that when those people say "God" they are specifically refering to christianism's God.

The first answer that comes to my mind: christianism doesn't have as much influence on people's lives anymore (which allows them to question organised religion) but at the same time the fear of the unknown still is a thing (which obligates them to embrace metaphysical ideas). However it seems a very simplistic (and possibly wrong) explanation, thus I'd like to hear others' interpretations about this issue.

And no, I'm not a mad christian/atheist/anything, I'm just honestly curious about it.
