This has got to be the most braindead writing meme. Sure, if you're trying to write about a specific area and make it realistic you might want to go and visit so you can get a taste of what it's like, but shit like love, sex, thrill, friendship, etc. can be replicated by a good writer whether or not he's experienced it. I don't have to have sex to describe how a character having sex would react, just like I don't have to be a murderer to know that committing murder would be scary/astonishing/bewildering/whatever other emotion.
