Should I dedicate my life to non-fiction in direct search of truths or fiction and live the /lit/ life, in search of truths through lyric. What's the truly /lit/ move?

Why is linguistics so un/lit/? You would think understanding the phonetics of language will have some involvement with great literature but most of the time it leaves you to be a soulless bugman like picrelated. Also, what understanding of other languages do linguist have? A prof. I was having lunch a while back told me that he 'understood' most Indo-European languages but did not really speak them, how does that even work? Anyone can explain how most linguistics professors don't even understand more than their native language?
