I think I've formulated a real distinction between literature and just any other fiction. Please tell me if it's correct. Base fiction only contains elements that serve the plot or the characters, while literature contains only elements that serve the author's goal of what they're trying to say with the novel, its theme. For example the glasses sign in the Great Gatsby has no real effect on the characters or the plot, but it is important for the the theme of the story.
