Now, being more serious, the problem does not sound very rational at first glance, but be sure it makes sense: German society (and I would extend it to other Northern European countries — but since I never lived there, with less confidence — and, in a lesser extent, to the entire first world) is too smooth. Everything just works too well. The consequence is that it becomes too unjustifiable to not follow it and you become a cog. Even if you revolt or do nothing, you're still a cog of this unfathomable machine, it has space for it. In my Latin American home-country, power is more transparent. We see who is holding the whip and we feel the pain when it hits. It's less pleasurable, sure, but be certain that behind all your societal opioids, there is something whipping you just as hard. Ours, at least, has a human face.
