>My plan was to get drunk and incapable, and I thought they would be less lenient towards drunkards in the East End. I bought some tobacco and a "Yank Mag" against my forthcoming imprisonment, and then, as soon as the pubs opened, went and had four or five pints, topping up with a quarter bottle of whisky...I began staggering along the pavement in a westward direction...finally I saw two policemen coming. I pulled the whisky bottle out of my pocket, and, in their sight, drank what was left...
What makes you think you'll ever succeed as a writer when you'll never have this level of dedication to your material?

During college I decided George Orwell was my favorite writer. I used to hitchhike around England in period costume, pretending to be him. I visited his grave at Sutton Courtenay and laid some hops on it. I sat up all night in Trafalgar square just to see what it was like.
Many years later I've retained the habit of imagining Orwell is with me, or that we're communicating through time, and I explain aspects of our 21st century life to him. I imagine how impressed he is when I browse the web on my phone. I comfort him by explaining that democratic socialism turned out pretty well in the UK, and that nobody starves to death anymore. I try to justify American politics; we get into little debates. This is how I flesh out my half-assed political opinions; by talking them over with my time-traveling buddy George (actually he lets me call him Eric)

"It is this intuitive grasp of the irrational side of totalitarianism--human sacrifice, cruelty as an end in itself, the worship of a Leader who is credited with divine attributes--that makes Zamyatin's book superior to Huxley's"

But this is bullshit of course, Mr Rightwing authoritarian. You're the one who idolizes him. The weak minded, "intellectual" or not, were his only admirers.

This is why Marxism needs Stirnerism

I think it's important for the beginner to master clarity first. So "write more simply" is good advice.
Later when you can think of something interesting to say and just how to say it, you can develop something more ornate appropriate for a given story.

Put the gun down Ernie.
